A more prominent role for the regional rural banks

The regional rural banks are banks that have been established under an Act of the national government. The objective of such a bank is to develop the rural economy by providing credit and other facilities to the small and marginal farmers, agriculturists, artisans and small entrepreneurs. A distinctive feature of a rural bank is that though it is a separate body corporate with perpetual succession and a common zeal, it is very closely linked with the commercial banks which have sponsored the proposal to establish it.

A rural bank must have a tie-up with another firm to stay afloat in the competitive American financial market. It is widely known that very few of the prominent American banks want to start a branch in the rural hinterlands that is home to a few thousand people. The main question raised is regarding the viability of such a move. Urbanization is a continuing process in the United States and more and more people are now moving into the prominent cities. Property prices are falling continuously in the rural areas whereas it is shooting up like never before in the main city centers.
