Blender: http://www.blender3d.org/ - Complete freeware open-source 3d modelling, animation and rendering suite. Tutorials and help available at elysiun.com

YAFRAY: http://yafray.org - Open-source renderer for Blender. Uses photons and many other features to provide accurate, photo-real renders.

The GIMP: http://www.gimp.org - Freeware graphics program, nearly identical to Photoshop.

Paint.NET: Paint.NET - Download - Its the new version of paint, nearly identical to photoshop but lacks my favorite spriting features of paint which is the recolor eraser. GIMP would probably be a better choice but Paint.Net has some different features and in my opinion easier to navigate.
