I vote avast, I once said comodo but its turned out to be one of the worst.
Yes the "virus updated" is annoying but I would sooner be free of viruses.
I loathe norton since the expensive package allowed a virus to trash my bios and motherboard.
I also use spybot and avg rootkit detector.
I also rum a linux system using mepis so don't have to worry with that one.

You're wrong. Windows is in fact more secure than Mac in some ways.

I don't use a antivirus either ... i use mozilla to protect me...
I know how to identify a dodgy site and my no script blocks all the crap.

but i think i did get infected some time ago... till this day I don't know if it was a virus or if I just messed something in my settings.
But as a precaution I use bitdefender, cos its free.

Yes, use avast, don't use AVG.

I recommend Avast because AVG has heuristics that detects many legitimate items as malware. It has also blocked some websites and mark them as a 'phising site' even though they are not and even after adding them to a exclusion list (tested by me). I remember once when it detected one of it's program files as a trojan! affraid

Hello,

I use Avira AntiVir. Is a German version, which you don't know, right?

I've only used 3
Norton,
AVG,
and BitDefender.

AVG, and BitDefender both have free versions which is cool.
but I would pay the $50 (U.S. Dollars) a year for Nortons services. Its so much better, and worth the money. Especially if you download from torrents.

Always used to use Norton, but switched to AVG a year ago and immediately noticed how much quicker it is. Wouldn't go back to Norton.

Avira, but otherwise i don't care. My daily tasks, tests, everything is performed on virtual machine, whatever changes i make to the system doesn't "affect" it due to the restore button.

Vmware4life.

Avira is good enough as a freeware. Much better than the free alternative, AVG.

ESET NOD32 seems the proper anti-virus, so I think I'll stick with it.

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. And did I mention that it's free!

I am also using the kaspersky 2010.
I realized that I don't get infected from the net... its damn pendrives and removalable discs that are my problem.

but pendrives are like virus magnets... I mean come on...
I go to a friends house, get some files... come back home , plug in my pendrive and kaspersky goes mad with trojans and other junk

I use Common Sense 1.0. Works every time.

jalokim, you can eliminate your problem with removable media if you disable autoplay.

Doctor Inferno : I know and i agree. Last time i used AVG it shut itself down and displayed me an error message in Polish ( which isn't my mother language ).

musket : mvps eh ? Razz Nice, but i am using improved version with around 170.000 entries, while mvps only has 16.500.

Jalokim : as Dion said, turn off autoplay and scan all inserted media before "opening" it.

Dion : generally i would agree, but it has shown in practice that common sense isn't enough nowadays... It greatly helps, yes, but its not "everything".

If you want free version antivirus then go with avast. its the best in freeware antivirus.it has all the options like online web scanner, antispyware. its effective for almost all the virus. has got regular updates.after installing go to avast.com and register there to get registration key for free. also install spybot search and destroy to give more protection to the system.

if you want paid version antivirus then go with kaspersky. its the best antivirus. has all the features like online scanner, antispyware, self defense, rescue disk and many more. no need to install any other softwares for more protection. its the all-in-one antivirus. has got regular updates, takes less ram and gives more protection to the system.
