What Facilities Are Available With a Paid Account?

Post by mathmatika on Sat May 17, 2008 4:37 pm

Hi guys,

I started a free forum for fans of the rock band Fanny just over a month ago: http://fanny7roads.forumakers.com/

On behalf of everyone who uses our forum, THANK YOU VERY MUCH - we are all enjoying it!!

I am not sure what factilties I would get if I paid for hosting here, would I have the same freedom to change the software as if I had installed the PHPBB software onto a server elsewhere?

I am not familiar with PHP, having a background in ASP.NET and C#. I would like the chance to 'play' with PHP, but at the moment it is not clear to me if I can modify a free forum using PHP scripts. Is this possible?
If not, is it possible if I pay for an account/hosting?

Can you recommend a forum that I could look at to see the extent to which a free forum can be changed using PHP scripts?

Thank you, once again.

Mathmatika.

Well there isn't a "Paid Account"

You can however purchase credits to obtain:

1. Custom Domain name
2. Add additional storage to your gallery
3. Edit the templates (with this you can add or delete scripts on your site)
4. Rid your site of ads.

to purchase said credits:

go to admin panel
Misc
Credits management
Purchase credits

Hi Kilsek,

Ok, let us use the term 'buy credits'. If I 'buy credits' can I only use PHP to change the appearance of the forum?

I read a few posts on the phpbb.com site that suggests I can use PHP to add functionality such as incorporating Ventrilo into the forum.

Can I use PHP to add functionality?

1) With the free forum.
2) Only when I 'buy credits'.
3) Not at all on this site.

Thank you.

When you buy credits you can add many javascripts. You can't add php hacks-for hack you need access to the database which you cannot

Many thanks for the information Kilsek!

Oh sorry, I must still ask:

Does that only apply to PHP script that would require access to a database? Can I not even write a 'Hello World' PHP script here?

I planned to do a simple e-card script...

As long as it is javascript you can add it. I have been able to add many things to my site using edit templates.

I have been able to:

Add side bar to the index
extend the signiture area
deleted the lines at the top and bottom of posts and replace with images
have been able to move the email PM etc button to the top of posts.

there is many things that can be done.

Hi, support requests are meant to be done in the adequate subsection of the Support Forum, whereas here we're in the General Discussions.

I'm therefore locking this thread Wink
