What's Better for A Forum, Dark or Light Theme?

Post by Roxanne S. on December 25th 2011, 7:15 am

First topic message reminder :

Hi,

The title says it all, what's better? Well, if you're going to answer that it depends on your opinion, please don't answer that, okay? What my point here, really, is to ask forumotion members what theme is better for forums.

Let's see, if a forum is where you can speak your mind and read/write your opinions, it's a gotta be a light theme right? So that it won't be hard to read.
But if you like more design, and a bit modern, you'll choose a dark theme.

So it's your pick, what's better? Dark or Light Theme? Smile

I think black forums look cool, but I prefer navigating a lighter forum.

I like a light theme. Most forums with a dark theme looks horrible (but not all) .

Light, bright and colourful is the way to go, with a few images thrown in.

I like dark backgrounds but lighter backgrounds have there place. I always wondered why YouTube doesn't have a black or dark background. I always equate the people that use light backgrounds as either someone without an imagination or someone letting you know who is in charge. They want to appear business-like and not look to groovy.. lol!

It depends on the main idea of the topic, something bright and colourful for fantasy and rainbows and all of that, it depends on why your forum was created in my opinion

I voted for both...
But,I prefer dark themes,my eyes hurt me when I look long at light colors,
and its much more nicely for me,but I noticed that people love more light themes.
For me its always black for main color and than one or two more colors for contrast.

I personally think that light themes are easier on the eyes, but if your forum is better suited to a dark theme (like mine is) then that's probably the better option.

I personally like the light theme better.
But it does just depend on what the people on the site like, and what they would like to see.

I think it depends more on your theme and audience. If you're more for 'normal' folk, pop culture, etc lighter usually better. If your audience is more rock, goth, horror, etc then darker is probably better.

My type is Dark Theme but if you use white make sure you have good gradients and transitions. Not too white but just a simple white that is not hurting the eyes of the guest.

And it also depends on the aim of your forum. Theme reflects the content of the site.

Well, I always preferred dark themes for the classy modern look they give a forum, and because looks are very important when attracting new members. But recently I have decided to use a nice blue (which I would consider a light theme) on another website I created and it is working brilliantly, but for Forumotion I will always choose a dark theme.

I like a mixture of both, nothing too light or too dark as long as it's a decent them that's whats important.

My forum is dark because it looks better IMO though light could work too. Depends really on your preferences and what exactly your forum is used for Razz

Depends of the forum for me. I'm in RPG section, so if I create rpg forum, I would watch what is it about, plot, url, based on what and chose light and colorful or dark. Yea I'm freak ^^
