Is there a way to prevent IP addresses from seeing the forum
I know if you ban the ip address, they can't register with it, but what about preventing them from being able to access the site or see it altogether? I don't want to disable this for all guests, only ones I know are using fake IPs or are people we've had to ban. We're having a problem with hacking at my forum. The members who are being hacked have had the comments in their profiles edited, some of their posts edited, and one of them had their password changed so they couldn't get on. I really want to stop this

There is no fool proof way for doing this. Users can use proxies too. Hence, i generally advise not to ban IP's.

Well what should I do then? I'm using a site that will tell me if it's a proxy or suspected of being one. Those are the ones I ban.

Could it be a staff member whose changing profile info, editing posts, and changing log in info?

I don't think so. I've been the only admin up until a couple of days ago. The member who had their password changed was several weeks ago. And yesterday another member believed that their post had been edited. It was on a private board. No one is a mod over the private board except for the administrators.

there would be now way to set permissions for certain ip, you would have to set it for guest or groups.
I would just allow guest to view and read forums, but you have to have a members account to reply or create topics.
That's about the best thing you can do for that.
As far as the members accounts being hacked.. Well something dose not add up,
Why not ban the admin account if anything, so i am not sure what to think about all that.
If you have other admin check the logs, or just get just temporarily take away their admin powers until you can try to figure out what is happening.
I mean if you take a way their powers for a month and then seem to not have any problems in that time.. well put two and two together.. also remind your member's never to share any pass words as well

I know it's not the admins. I just made them admins a couple of days ago. The hacking happened almost a month ago. Someone changed one of my members' passwords so they couldn't get on, and I had to get them a new password so they could get back on. I was the only admin at the time.

Well if it only happened to one member, and was a month ago and everything is fine now, then i would not worry about it.
For all you know the member was irresponsible and shared his pass, or left his account open on shared or public computer, who knows?
Just be sure this member creates a new pass with caps number and symbols,
But unless it was happening to a lot of your members at once, then i dont think it's anything to worry about, and it's not like the founders account was hacked..

I am thankful my account hasn't been hacked, or any of my other admins.
This wasn't the only time it happened. It was the only time someone's password was changed, but yesterday someone posted on one of my members' accounts a post that the person swears they didn't make. They've assured me no one else knows their passwords. This was on a private board too. Guests can't even see it, and there are no moderators of that board.

Re: Is there a way to prevent IP addresses from seeing the forum
Yeah well it's odd, this is not something we hear a lot so really cant tell you what is going on,
Unless another admin is changing passes and not saying anything.
I dont think it would even show in your log if a admin changed a members pass.. check in your logs and see if there is anything that said a admin updated this user, before you gave them a new pass.
Other then that i will have to do a few test on one of my test boards.
But the whole thing dose not ad up to me, someone is not telling you the full story, either the member is full of it, or one of you admins change the pass and is not fessing up.
It just dont seem like something a hacker would do, but who knows???
I will do a few test and see if there is anymore info i can provide,
Other then that save all the info and post you can, and you can always create a test admin account and send me the user and pass so i can go in and check some things you may have overlooked.
Oh you know what, go to the post this member said he didn't create or edit, and click on the ip, it will have a list of other ip or members that was in the account, so if you see a admins ip in that user list, well then their ya have it
And it's a long shot, and i am not saying it's a admin, but there has to be some sort of explanation.. to me it just seems someone is not telling you the correct info.. or it was indeed someone that got in the account and is screwing around.
So if thats the case you have to tell your member to create better passes and do not give them out.

I did check the ip. There was no admin listed for it. The user did edit the post. I told them if it happened again, not to, so I could get the IP address.
This isn't surprising me. Most of my members come from another site, that I have advertised a lot on, that I do know has had hacking. I would guess that someone from that site saw my link and decided to hack my members' accounts. And, like I said, when the one user's password was changed, I was the only admin there.
What would you like me to do to help you figure it out?
