How to handle malicious posters? Empty How to handle malicious posters?

I run a good forum with friendly people, but have a member now who - despite being intelligent and a good contributor potentially, seems to post in an antagonising way, ie. taunting people who like Richard III in a 15th Century board. He doesn't swear or SHOUT, but nevertheless, to do that with a first post smacks of menace and showboating?

I intend to warn him via PM if he doesn't conform.

I also recently had a member who linked through to extreme right wing-type posts on another site (his), maybe I was heavy-handed, but I deleted his links then put him in a non-permission group of his own.

Ages ago, I had a group of neo-nazis joining another version of my history site- I argued with them that they were wrong, rude and warped, and banned them.

Would you do any different?

I think its your personal opinion about the user about the way he talks. If he does talk in a taunting way, he would get a response back from the users. So firstly, you should never take action let some user complain to you. This way he knows, that you don't have a personal opinion on him but the users feel it & they don't like it. You can then PM him & ask him to mellow down, as users don't appreciate the way he talks & it upsets them. If he continues, you can continue with your warnings & then based on personal discretion take any kind of action against him.

Bottomline: You are a community, you should voice your community's opinion & administrate based on the community's requirements.

Thanks,

What would you recommend for more extreme members who occasionally join?

He is now behaving.

I meant for other members, extremists as I described above- is it too heavy handed to just ban them?
Or would most people here just pop them into their own group with few permissions?

Yes i know, you are talking about the extremists. Ban them in public so that users know what kind of behavior is not allowed. Its like a learning lesson for them.

Thanks, Sanket.

Would you give such right-wing members a first chance? Or at the first sign of trying to twist history or post links to their 'views'?

Considering your history site, everyone will have their own views. So its personal discretion. If you disagree with something, doesn't mean you can ban them. So make certain rules that no abusive language or hatred towards any community will be tolerated. Once rules are in place, things will become easier.

It's not my disagreeing, it's the nasty and hateful nature of such potential idiots, who would be curtailed or banned on any fair-thinking forum - as was on the BBC, for example, or as is in the media.

I wondered how this community felt about moderating such examples, that's all.

Thanks

My advise is to have a process of punishment already planned out for any and all members. That way, you can handle each transgression in a similar fashion so that you can be seen by your members as professional and just.

For example:
The discipline system is as follows:
1) Member breaks one rule, member is warned.
2) Member continues breaking rule, member is confronted by a staff member via PM and is given an infraction for one week or more depending on what is done.
3) Member still continues to break the rules, member is discussed by the entire staff to decide what kind of ban (temporary, permanent or deactivation), if any will be given.
4) In some cases, members may be instantly banned as damage control. In such cases the member will be emailed, where the member has a chance to explain themselves and contest the ban.
5) The staff members would ideally like to resolve all conflict peacefully. If a mod or administrator has private messaged you, you are better off co-operating.

However, this is just a sample, so some may view this as lenient or may even harsh--as we all have different ideals about handling our trouble makers.

However, I'd most certainly never punish or confront anyone based on MY ideals or opinions--because they just don't matter on their own. It's the community's opinions that matter, and if they become unhappy with it, then it's your job to handle it.

Thanks, Leah, good advice.

I know my members well and they'd not be happy with some bigoted neo-nazi moron (a rose by another name) jumping in and perverting history or even trying to be meek but slyly posting twisted history slants and links to extremist revisionism.

Last time, a member alerted me- so I guess I'd be tough, that'd be what I'd do personally, but even as admin wouldn't tolerate such bigotry and extremism of any political slant anyway.
