In progress SOPA/PIPA?

Post by Zeena on January 18th 2012, 2:46 am

First topic message reminder :

I heard a bit about a bill currently being looked at and decided on on Thursday/Friday of this week in the United States of America. More information about it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16590585

Will Forumotion be affected in any way? Or is it too early to be decided? Thanks!

Just to add for latest news on the megaupload shut down and bust.
Yeah it seems the owners where corrupt and making hundreds of millions on copyrighted materials. So i am sure hey have been investigating it all for a while, And the timing is kind of odd, But i am sure other large file hosting companies will be reviewing all their policies and laws to make sure they have their self's covered.

Anyway that's the only file host i have ever used, I never uploaded copy written stuff, mostly stuff with my own creations for graphics, videos even some of my own written songs, But whatever someone is uploading i do not see how a file host can be responsible, The would just be obligated and responsible to remove anything in violation if they have gotten a report or came across it..

But anyway hears what went down on Friday when they finally arrested the owner of megaupload, sounds like they had half of the new Zealand police force... lol helicopters and all wow.

Look at he guys freaking mansion and property.. Yeah he was living pretty large for sure, Estimated 500 million .

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/megaupload-kim-dotcom-arrest-sopa-283768

Spoiler:
After New Zealand police attempted to gain entry into Kim Dotcom's $30 million home, he barricaded himself from officers in a safe room.

New details on the arrest of Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom have been released, and they are reminiscent of a scene from a high-octane action movie.

Dotcom was one of four men arrested in an investigation of the massive file-sharing website led by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, but he wasn't cooperative in the slightest, Reuters reports.

Dozens of police officers, with helicopters flying overhead, broke into Dotcom's mansion, which sits on farmland and is believed to be worth $30 million in New Zealand dollars, after he refused to let them in.

"Despite our staff clearly identifying themselves, Mr. Dotcom retreated into the house and activated a number of electronic-locking mechanisms," detective inspector Grant Wormald said.

That forced the police to break the locks, with Dotcom -- also known as Kim Schmitz -- barricading himself into a safe room that officers had to cut through in order to gain entry.

"Once they gained entry into this room, they found Mr. Dotcom near a firearm which had the appearance of a shortened shotgun. It was definitely not as simple as knocking at the front door," Wormald said.

It is said that Dotcom made $42 million in 2010 alone. Police seized many of his possessions, including luxury cars, artwork and LCD televisions. In addition, about $175 million was seized and dozens of bank accounts from Megaupload executives frozen.

Federal authorities shut down Megaupload earlier this week amid SOPA backlash. According to a 72-page indictment, Megaupload claims more than 1 billion visitors in its history, with 50 million visitors on a daily basis for about 4 percent of all Internet traffic.

Shortly after Megaupload went down, the hacktivist group Anonymous targeted key government and music websites, including the Depart of Justice, Universal Music Group and the MPAA.

In recent days, Hollywood studios have reportedly been upset that the White House backed away from the anti-piracy legislation they believe is pivotal in cracking down "rogue" foreign websites.

What's disturbing is that I've been warning people all over the internet about ACTA, but no notice was taken even when all the SOPA/PIPA stuff had died down :/

Now it's up in a frenzy, and all I can say is: "I told you so". Now we'll have to all protest or something!

I guess they need some antibacterial SOPA. Razz

MegaUpload deserved to be shut down. As do a few other similar sites. But that isn't going to solve this problem, nor will (now-dead) bills like SOPA/PIPA.

History tells us that restricting the supply of something illegal doesn't work. You must instead find a way to decrease the demand for the illegal product. But in this case, it may be too late to do this. We have allowed an entire generation to be brought up believing that ripping (oh sorry, "sharing") digital information (music, games, images, webpages, scripts) is an acceptable behavior when in fact it is no different than going to a store and stealing the actual "hard" product.

iTunes was a start in the right direction. As was NetFlix. One hopes as much time is spent on developing solutions like this, as was spent on things like SOPA/PIPA.

You may have a point their Dion, the whole Internet was built both in legal and illegal material and products, everything balances around the Internet, think about it. However, relief will also be brought to some people, like artists, I mean piracy, it has reduced money from big artists, which is not fair. However, that is not fair for the people that actually buy the albums. Wink

In my opinion this whole situation is a confusing one. scratch

I haven't followed the news lately about SOPA/PIPA and ACTA.
But from what I know my country (holland) wanted to sign ACTA, but then made some mistakes so they haven't signed it yet.
I also heard something that they aren't going to sign at all, which would be benificial for me, but a lot of countries will still be in it.
It's sad the way it goes, but most of these bills are made by people who are not from the generation that uses it 24/7.
They see it a whole different way then us and therefor make other decisions then we would make.
