Solved Emoticon Issue

Post by rellison8 on March 26th 2012, 5:08 pm

I am having a minor issue with my emoticons for some users. For some reason when they hit the Quote button to reply to a post they can not see the emoticons.

Has anyone run into this issue and is there something I can tell them to do to fix it. They are long time members and it just start happening the last couple weeks. However it is not happening to me so hard for me to figure out what it could be.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Could you ask the users to clear their cache & cookies, or try another browser please?

I talked to the 2 users having the issues and they claimed they have done this already. To clarify a little I guess they can actually see the emoticons, just when they click on them they do not show up in the post and it only happens when they are quoting another post.

They are both IE users which does not surprise me. If I ever have a user issue 99% of the time they are using IE.

Thanks for the response and any other help you can offer would be great.

That makes me nearly clueless

Have you added any new scripts recently (CSS, JS ect)
Can you ask them to check if there's an update for IE as well please?

No new scripts that I have added. I have asked them about there version of IE. We'll see what happens.

I have a feeling it is something with there systems cause every other user is fine and I have plenty of people including myself that even post from there phone now and then and it works perfect. I just am not sure what to tell them to fix it.

When you get a response, can you find out if you have any other users on the same browser version?

Can you also ask the users whom are experiencing the issues to check and apply any updates

Solved Re: Emoticon Issue

Post by rellison8 on March 27th 2012, 1:02 am

All of a sudden people are coming out of the wood work with this problem and its all when people go to use IE. Long as they have Firefox or chrome it is fine. However with IE the emoticons on my site will not work.

I have deleted about half of them and it has done nothing to help the situation. So I don't know what it could be because my site has not changed but something is going seriously wrong with it.

www.fishn4fun.net is the address if anyone can help.

Ok, this is a java issue and I believe it in on my site only. So it looks as if I am going to need someone from tech to look at the coding of my site and see what has happened.

Its a java error only in IE and only in the quote function. If you type in the actual code for the emoticon it will show up in the post but if you hover over the emoticon picture itself and click on it nothing happens. I know that is a java script function that puts the coding into the post but that is not happening. I would have no clue how to go about fixing it or even if it is something I could fix but I am guessing the tech people here will.

So if you could take a look at it I would be forever greatful.

Ok sorry, I would delete the post now but I don't know how you do that, I am assuming a moderator needs to do that. If so then go for it as I added it to the post above.

Again sorry, my bad.

Solved Re: Emoticon Issue

Post by Darren1 on March 27th 2012, 1:52 pm

I'm stumped scratch

Are the users using the 3 main IE versions (IE 7/8/9), or are they using previous versions (5/6)
If their using 5/6, they need to update ASAP for their safety, plus IE6 is terrible.
Can you ask anyone using 7 to upgrade to 8. IE 8 & 9 should be the only 2 being used. (8 for XP Users, 9 for Win 7 users)
Ask them to make sure the browser is up to date, which is critical.

If all is well above, being up to date, lets proceed with passing this up -

Are you able to provide me via Private Message a test, or an account which will have temporary access to the forum so I can check it out, and see if I can get it passed up to the higher authorities, to fix it?

All the users are using either IE8 or 9.

I even went and tried it on my home computer with IE9 and its doing the same thing.

I will send you a PM with an account you can log into the site with now.

Thank you for all your help.

Thanks for that, I've confirmed the issue specifically on IE, but have thought of 1 thing I want to confirm,

Have you edited any templates, I can tell your on PHPBB2, and the reason for the BBCode bar to be missing is commonly reflected by a bad edit of the templates, or addition of a Wibiya Bar, the latter you don't have however.
Please check ALL the templates: Admin panel >> Display > Templates.

I have not edited the templates. Unless somehow it was done by mistake because that is above and beyond my knowledge base. So I just stay away from there. Smile I did recently change the color layout of the site and the header picture and such but other than that I am about clueless about changing the rest of that stuff.

When I go into the templates section it says everything is still at default values.

I am not in the same boat as that thread even though it seems like the exact same issue. Difference is I have done nothing to change anything about the site in the last few years. It just came up all of a sudden for no reason that I can locate.

Thanks for looking into this for me, I hope that it is something that is fixable.

Awesome! Thank you very much. What is it about it or do you know? Possibly the fact that I made it BOLD type cause I think that is the only thing that changed about it.

Just curious as not to make the same mistake again.

Great support around this site. Couldn't be happier with the work and response you all gave this problem. You all rock. :wouhou:

I figured out what I did wrong. I was using
Code:
<b>
for bold instead of [b] and it was the issue. Again thank you.
