Solved topics list as main page?

Post by z-p on April 14th 2012, 3:44 pm

Hi there,

I've been searching around the topics here for 2 hours and couldn't find anything relevant, probably not using the right search terms though, so I hope you don't mind my asking.

I'd like my homepage to be the topics list, being as I have no categories, a single forum and no sub-forums.

The skin I'm using is a Phpbb 3, this one: http://demo.nicetheme.com/forum?theme_id=150451

Do I need a workaround using a html page?
That's just a guess on my part, judging by the fact that the available options in the ACP are:
forum index, portal, html.

No idea how I'd go about doing that either though; I know not what I speak of - complete noob.
I've seen where to create a html page in the ACP, but that's about as far as I can go with my limited knowledge. If I copy-paste the topics index page's source code into the ''create new HTML'' source box in the ACP, and then set that as the main page, it works but it doesn't update with new forum topics and posts. That was to be expected, I'm sure, however I'm guessing that the solution must be something along these lines.

This seems to work
<META HTTP-EQUIV="refresh" CONTENT="seconds;URL=the-other-url">
though not idea. Looking for a solution without redirection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
z-p

Hi,

For what you want to do this? It makes no sense when you already have it. scratch

Hey Keir,

Less clicking is the answer to your question.
Having only one forum means the current main page is just a welcome page, and I don't need that.
Straight to the topics list makes more sense, all the more because some of the users don't know much more than how to turn their computer on.

Cheers,
z-p

Ok. Let's say you will do it, but the really posts and topics can't generate as categories . They must be created in the forum. This is what you want do?

Hey Keir, thanks for looking into this, pal, much appreciated.
Not sure I follow you though.

Let me try to explain using an example; Take help.forumotion.com/forum and presume it only has a single forum. This last bit is important - a single forum.

Instead of having this as a homepage, which would only display one forum in my case, not many as you have here: http://help.forumotion.com/forum , I want my homepage to be the contents of my one forum (the topics list), like this: http://help.forumotion.com/f45-forum-design-appearance-help

The fact that I have one forum negates the need for a forum index page because there's nothing to chose from (as in, a number of forums); there's only one option (forum). Therefore, that page is just an extra mouse click.

Hope that's clearer.

I actually got it sorted with the redirection. It's not that bad a solution for the time being, I just had to work around some other stuff with the home button and logo redirection, but that's turned out quite alright.

Thanks,
z-p

Ok. I understand. This is your cod:

Code:
<div class="forabg"> <div class="inner"> <span class="corners-top"><span></span></span> <ul class="topiclist"> <li class="header"> <dl class="icon"> <dt>Title Header</dt> </dl> </li> </ul> <ul class="topiclist forums"> <li class="row"> <dl class="icon" style="background-image: url('http://illiweb.com/fa/fdf/parchemin.png'); background-position: 10px 50%;"> <dt style="margin: 0pt 0px 0pt 80px; display: block;"> <a href="Link" class="forumtitle">Title forum</a>
Description </dt> </dl> </li> </ul> </div>

Hi Keir,

That's really kind of you, thanks so much!
Do note I'm a proper noob though; I don't know what to do with this code Embarassed
If you have a minute, please give me a rough idea where it's meant to go, or perhaps a step or two to get me started. I'll fill in the gaps myself to a good extend, no need for very many details.

Been also looking for a way to change the link on my logo so it directs to the topics list, not the forum index. A script that I found here in the forums and pasted into the ACP's javascripts box didn't work:
Code:
$(function(){
  $('#i_logo').parent('a').click(function(){
    window.location="YOU FORUM LINK HERE";
    return false;
  });
});
I did put the right http address in there, enabled javasripts management and appied it to ''all pages''; that much I understand, I hope. I'm shooting in the dark, obviously, but one thought that's crossed my mind is maybe changes are not applied instantly and I should be re-syncing the site when I'm trying out things?

All the best,
z-p

Hello,

Good. So, this cod:
Code:
    <div class="forabg"> <div class="inner"> <span class="corners-top"><span></span></span> <ul class="topiclist"> <li class="header"> <dl class="icon"> <dt>Title Header</dt> </dl> </li> </ul> <ul class="topiclist forums"> <li class="row"> <dl class="icon" style="background-image: url('http://illiweb.com/fa/fdf/parchemin.png'); background-position: 10px 50%;"> <dt style="margin: 0pt 0px 0pt 80px; display: block;"> <a href="Link" class="forumtitle">Title forum</a>
 Description </dt> </dl> </li> </ul> </div>
you add in your Page HTML. He generate a categories with one forum. In this code, I wrote exactly what you change.

"Title Header" Ttitle of category. Example: Administration, General
"background-image: url('http://illiweb.com/fa/fdf/parchemin.png');" - The icon of forum
"Link" - where redirect the forum
"Title forum" - Title of forum. Exaample: Tutorials
" Description " - Description of forum. Example: This forum is for tutorials.

I would recommend you not create such a page, if you do not have the knowledge. It too hard! Wink

Hey thanks Keir. This is actually really far from what I'm getting at. I reckon we should leave it alone because it's well sorted with the redirection I was doing.
