Making a custom "who is online" applet.
I want to make an application that will display (in my forum's portal or a separate html page) the list of the currently online members and their current activity (the subforum or thread that they are viewing) in a way that matches my forum's theme (The forum has to do with the Harry Potter universe so I thought of having an application showing the information available at /viewonline in a way that resembles the magic clock of the Weasleys).
I thought of getting the html of the /viewonline page, figure out the names and activities of the users from there, and refresh the display of the (javascript?) application accordingly. I do have some programming experience but I'm going to use javascript for the first time. I don't need any technical details though, I will try to figure them out on my own. I just want to know if what I'm describing above is possible.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, I know. I want to format the information that is there in a different way in a different place of the forum. Is that possible?

It would be possible. You could include the who is online widget, allowing you to access it with javascript from wherever and format it accordingly.
