In progress Help, someone's account might've been hacked

Post by Brianman908 on May 20th 2012, 1:24 am

One of my member's account was deleted just out of nowhere. I didn't delete it, and neither did my other admins. On the admin panel it just says "member deleted" it doesn't say by who or how. I have it set to where users can't delete their accounts on their own. The user didn't do it. I restored the forum so that the account would come back, but IDK how it got deleted. IDK if someone hacked her email and unsubscribed or if they hacked her account.

Hello,

You can check if someone might have deleted it on your admin panel:
Admin Panel > General > Security > Administration > Check your administrators' activities.

The user didn't do it.
We're not sure about this, he may have unsubscribed by himself or..

IDK if someone hacked her email and unsubscribed or if they hacked her account.
This is most likely what happened.

If the member Has removed them self then the ACP will not say who removed them it will just say there gone
You can stop members from removing there self by doing the following steps

Apes Help File
ACP >> Users & Groups Tab

Users

Users options >> Allow members to unsubscribe : NO

SAVE

APE, I've done that, but apparently forumotion has a link that people can still use to unsubscribe from. Jophy, I am sure the member didn't do it herself because she emailed me saying she didn't, and I did check the security. It just says "Member Deleted"

I am guessing that someone else got her email password and used the unsubscribe link to unsubscribe her from my forum. I restored the forum and that undid it, but they did it again. It happened twice. I restored it twice. I had her change her email password and her account's password on the forum. It hasn't happened since then, but, if it happens again, what should I do? Take her email off her account?

Okay, I really need someone's help here. Someone's changed her password on her account and now she can't get on. Someone is hacking onto her account somehow. I need someone's help here

The only thing to do is change her password for her and send her the new password. Then when she log onto the forum, she needs to change her username and password. She needs to try to created a password someone can not easily figure out.

What exactly happens when she tries to log on - is there any kind of message?

It said it was an invalid password. She couldn't log in to her email either. I'm guessing they hacked her email and saw the password I sent to her yesterday. Her password's been changed and so has her email on her account.

Has her username been changed in the administration panel? Do you allow members to change their own usernames?

If you allow members to change their own usernames in their profiles then someone who hacks an account can change the username.

Edit:

I am sorry I just noticed that you said password. Is she sure that she is typing in the password correctly?

Yes, she's typing the correct username. Her username hasn't been changed. Her password was changed, as was her email account's password apparently. I am guessing that that is how they changed her password, as I had emailed her a new password last night when they were trying to delete her account. I changed her password again today, and this time I didn't email it to her, I PMd it to another account she has on my forum, and told her to write down the password and then delete the PM. So only her and I should know the password now. I also changed her email address on her account to a nonexistant one.

Yes, it said invalid username or password. Someone changed the password, and I had to change her email on the admin panel to mine and then have it email me a new password

ok best way to do this is to do the following steps
STEP 1, Remove the old account in the ACP
STEP 2, As admin Make a new account the way you would if you was a new member.

STEP 3, Then Give the member with this problem
the following info Don't worry this info will be changed by the member later.

USERE NAME : What ever you pick but not the one they used before
PASSWORD : pick an password for the member some thing easy

STEP 4,
Give the member this info and ask them to change the password and Email address --then when thats done get them to log out and back in again to make sure they can back log in
STEP 5, once this is ok then go in to the ACP and just change the name to what ever that members wants and your done.

Best thing to do is ask the member if they have a new Email address to use so it will not be hacked again.
