First thing that comes to my mind is to have more trees. So we have a lot of plants in our house & the garden in our building.

Secondly, i try to do as many things as possible on the computer & avoid using paper to do the same stuff. As, it can save a lot of trees if others adopt this strategy as well.

Deforestation is one of the worst part of the failures of our society.
I do my best to recycle a maximum of things.

It still lacks a real awareness on the part of industries I think.

My Family and I have started planting trees in the nearby park and in our neighborhood with permissions to help our environment and we also recycle all we can and we encourage our neighborhood to do so as well.

For every tree a storm or company destroys in the forest near my house we plant 2 more in its place!

Re: What about the sustainable development ?

I live out in the country...away from cities and towns. I believe my "city's" population is about two hundred. We have a gas station, a church, and a post office. Yeah.

One thing my mother did before she moved out was cover our one acre yard with trees. And I do mean cover. All we've got left is the driveway, and parts of that are hovered over by larger trees.

We live between two forests--well, lived. One was completely ruined and cut down to make way for two houses, so we apparently have two neighbors on the other side of the highway. I don't know who they are, but it was quite rude of them to ruin the forests like that. I hate it when I see that crap.

We have freakin' stores nearby that are murdering entire forests to "expand." Expand? Really? OH. And they plant occasional, pretty trees throughout their parking lot. Yeeaah, that really makes it okay. Especially when they do it for looks, rather than nature.

Leah7, you are lucky you stay in a place like that which has so much of green cover. Sadly, i stay in a concrete jungle. We hardly find any trees which gives rise to pollution. Oh my god

To be honest, Sanket, I'd never really thought about that. I don't ever truly consider the fact that perhaps some people don't get to have little luxuries like trees around them.

Now I realize that I've probably always taken them for granted. I always found them annoying for some reason or another, but if they are hard to find where you live...I can imagine that one would truly miss them.

I suppose I am very lucky. Thank you for pointing that out.

Thats what my city looks like.

I am lucky though in a way as the locality where i stay has a very decent amount of tree cover, not a lot but still its better than nothing.

WOW. That is massive...and I can see where you're coming from, to a degree. That's a lot of building and little nature.

Yes, there are a few trees...but there is no NATURE. There's a difference. Most trees are planted in places like this for decorative purposes. That's not really the same as a natural tree that grew there to simply be a part of Earth.

Ouch...concrete, indeed. I must say, I don't know how I would manage it. I'm so used to the quiet and the bugs and the space between small houses.

That is amazing! It is just so beautiful! I suppose now it is my turn to be jealous, because I have nothing like that nearby...not even close.

That must be like heaven to visit!

Its definitely heaven, but difficult to spot wild animals as there are only a few of them left now. But, i am glad we are trying to conserve whatever forest cover is left.

Sustainable Development: Stuff you can do to help

Post by 4ndy on May 6th 2013, 5:07 am

It was sad to see so little of practical value coming out of that Rio' conference, but still there are many people making a difference out on the ground today. Permaculture is well worth looking up in this regard, as a system for intelligently designing sustainable forestry and communities, reversing soil erosion/desertification even in the worst climates while providing a sustainble food supply.
Some of the tech that can enable us to intensively grow food in urban areas, without pesticides, and so avoid desertifying soils in the first place (e.g. aquaponics in vertical/greenhouse systems), is getting pretty impressive too, and more accessible to small gardeners.

If you look up Permaculture on youtube, or anywhere else if you prefer reading, there's a lot that you can do to improve your local area for mere peanuts or even for free. There are a couple of very active forums for help on these topics, and I also know a couple of guys who put together a wiki that allows you to search for appropriate plants by climate, which can help a lot with this.
I live in a cold wet area that was deforested centuries ago, and I'm doing all I can to replant our ancient forests. It can be lots of fun, and very rewarding when you take a bit of time to figure out what you're doing, so you don't break your back working against nature instead of with it. flower
