.tk domains don't work

Post by JamesTheAwesomeDude on September 11th 2012, 11:42 pm

Hello, I'm posting because I can't get a tk domain to work with forumotion. I have the CNAME records set up properly:
But forumotion always returns the following error:
I've tried both forum.troop275.tk AND www.troop275.tk (both of which are set up with the appropriate CNAME records; see first screenshot,) but this error message ALWAYS appears.

I have also posted this in .tk's Get Satisfaction forum here: https://getsatisfaction.com/dottk/topics/forumotion_wont_accept_tk_cname_records
If anybody would help with this, I would be extremely grateful.

1. Okay, 24 hours and no luck so far. Will try again in 2 days.
2. How does it slow down the forum? (don't be afraid to get technical with me; I actually know somewhat about how DNS and computers in general work. And what I don't know, I'm willing to learn. Smile )

Hello.

".tk" is a "fake" domain name indeed.

Why am I saying this?

Cause ".tk" domains, wich really are is just a simply redirection, but not a real domain name by itself.

If you want to have a domain name you can use .com .net .biz .org

If the problem is the money, you can activete donations, so users will can donate money wich will be converted into credits, and using credits you will can buy a real domain name.

The "URL forwarding" is a redirect, (In fact, it's not even that; they just put the site in an iframe,) but the CNAME records, MX Records, and A Records are legit. (My friend actually ran a Minecraft server with a .tk domain for a while.)
I would just use .info or .org, but neither of those are free, and the domain name is just for convenience; it's not absolutely critical, and I don't think that it would be a very good use of the Troop's money to blow $10/year or more on having to type 13 fewer characters on their first visit to the forum...

Alrighty, nothing on day 3. (I haven't changed the DNS settings at all in that timeframe; it still remains the way that you saw it in that screenshot.) I've tried entering www.troop275.tk, forum.troop275.tk, and just plain troop275.tk, but no luck. Is this a problem on your end, or .tk's end? (I actually hope that this is on your end because at least then it'll be fixed promptly. .tk's support takes a looooooong time to get back to you.)

Hello,

The .tk domains aren't real domain names but are "virtual DNS".
In clear, with a virtual DNS, you'll navigate on your forum through an iFrame. You risk many things by using it : loss of SEO, errors of sessions on your forum, untimely logout... and sometimes, difficulties to configurate the redirection to your forum.

We aren't able to bring you support to use an iFrame, sorry.

Oh, okay. Sorry about that. I do need help with this, though. I've been puzzling over this forever.

Yeah, I know about the iFrame thing, but I thought that that was only for the "Domain Forwarding." I am pretty sure that the A Record and CNAME Records are the real deal. (I have a friend who used .tk domains for his Minecraft server, and there's no WAY that iFrames would work for that. It worked, too. I played on it a few times.)
