What are ranks?

I'm guessing that this has probably been asked in the past, but I wasn't successful in my quick serch for the question just a minute ago. I just want to know at the moment what ranks and how I go about configuring them? I've looked into it a little, but I'm still not sure of the feature's purpose.

Oh, I've already got it figured out. I found that it was already on the profile, but above the avatar. Thanks for all your help.
