Question Regarding Free Domain Name

Hi there,
My forum was offered a free domain name a few days ago. Our current domain name lasts us for another month and a bit (about 57 days to be exact), so I want to wear that one out until a few days before it ends to then renew the domain name.
My question is, how long will the free renewal be offered, and if for some reason I forgot to accept the free renewal and our current domain name ended, would we be able to use the free renewal or would it disappear?
Just want to make sure so I don't ruin our opportunity. Thanks in advance!
