According to my admin panel a guest is viewing a closed group. According to their IP address, this "guest" could well be a former member who I had to ban. How is it possible that they are in a closed group?

If it's merely a "closed" group and not a "hidden" group, people should be able to view it and see the members inside. They won't be able to join, obviously. Especially as a guest, but even if they rereg you'll be alright.

Also if groups are not viewable by guests all they would see would be the log in page.

I'm sorry but I worded my original post badly. According to the admin panel the guest was viewing a sub-forum that they should not be able to even see. If I log out then I can't see it, so how could this guest see it? The guest was shown as viewing this sub-forum which is only available by special request from members of the forum.

They are not seeing the forum, they are seeing the log in page.

Then why does the admin panel show them as viewing one particular sub-forum? There are over ten forums and some of them have sub-forums, so how/why does the admin panel show them in one particular sub-forum that they should not be able to see, and one that is a closed group?

Please post the links to those areas, and I will tell you what I see.
