http://abysst.forumotion.com/

ignore the banner I just used it as a placeholder to find the width and height i need.

but i want it to look like to have it stretched along the top like the banner of this forum

Probably the easiest way to achieve the effect you say you want for your banner image , is to use the resizing option in any photo editing sites such as Photobucket, Google+, Flikr, PicMonkey, etc.

When it is saved, at an image storage site, copy its URL to paste it in the Forum main logo window at General/explore in Pics Management (Advanced) at Display in your ACP. Click Save.

To change the colour go your ACP then to Display, then to Colors, just below Pics management, then to Header background color. When you click on to its window a colour chart will appear, select the colour you want. Click Save.

Using a theme shouldn't matter as I have been able to change the header, banner, background, colour scheme, text, etc of most skins I have used.

Your forum looked ok to me. There was a new banner & a black background. Is this how you want your forum to look?? If you want an image for your background just copy the URL of the picture you want to use then paste it into the window of Background picture (page) directly below Forum main logo in Pics management. Click Background fixed then Save.
