Unread messages
A forum member today told me this:
When a member is in the main forum page, where the categories and forums are viewed, when in a forum there is unread messages in some topics, there is a little yellow square to the right (instead of a white). In the forum, there might be more than just one topic with unread messages. So, I was asked to do something so that the square stays yellow until all the unread replies are opened.
I hope I explained it so that it is understanable.

Re: Unread messages
Tell them to always check the "View unanswered posts" page often. I don't know if you can do anything about the yellow square or not.

the new topic messages or new replies will only show as new post when you log in and see them.
If you do not check all of what was new then log out and in again they will no longer show as new.
So basically what Silver Cloak said above is what you want to tell your members to do in case they have missed new post or replies.
as far as the yellow square i need a screen shot. it is probably the little indicator that will always show when there are unread post or topics.. it is only your new post/post message icon, that will do what i explained above

Re: Unread messages
those are the white and yellow squares.
when a membr reads one topic with new message where the yello square is, then it turns white once they are in the home page again, although there are more unread messages, in other topics of that forum.
It doesn't retain its color till all the new messages are opened by the member.
So they forget that there were more unread posts.
I guess they ask for too much

It's automatic. Best thing to do is open that thread, and open the other topics in a new tab because once you open the topic with many new ones, and go back to homepage, it'll show the thing is white. Another thing advisable is if you activate your widgets and put in Recent Topics on either side of the home page and portal if you want.
ACP < Modules < Forum Widgets/Portal Management < Structure (If in portal), if not, don't bother this < Activate Forum Widgets: Yes < Recent Topics and place it on either side < Save
