In progress threads being split and locked

Post by Flappypaddles on November 26th 2012, 3:34 pm

Today I had a thread split and locked, I know forumotion do it when the post count gets to 990 but I just wondered what is the frequency of the tool that does it.
this thread was well past 990 posts and the time of the split was 2 weeks before the time it was actually split
Is it only run every 30, 60 or 90 days

It has created a big furore on my forum with the conspiracy nuts out in force.

I have told them that it is forumotion doing it, but they cannot understand why it was not done immediately.

is it also done becasue of space requirement????

Hi,

Forumotion doesn't. It's the forum itself. I think you cannot change that option, but the limit is 990. You'll have to let your members understand that it's something automatic done by the forum.

Attention!

Hello,

It sounds like you have hit a limit. Don't worry, this is perfectly normal. Here is a list of all the Forumotion limits: http://help.forumotion.com/t1709-some-limits-of-forumotion-forum

There is nothing that can be done to stop this, unfortunately. Even if it was past 990 posts, I think it splits around pages 66-67 depending on how many posts there are per page.

I understand why it is being done, I just wonder what the frequency of it happening is. the current thread that got split was split 2 weeks after it reached and passed the 990 limit.
is it something that perhaps runs on the last sunday of the month?

I don't think there is a frequency... as I said in the above post it tends to split around pages 66-67 depending on how many posts displayed per page. I can pass this up to our pro admin for an answer if you'd like.

it did split at post 990
but had reached 1150 posts before the split occurred
there was a gap of 2 weeks.
the 990'th was posted on nov11th but the thread was not split until nov 25th.

This has just happened to me too. I am finding it VERY annoying. And the Split happened the same way as yours, flappypaddles. Its really weird.

Just a question how did you guys ascertain how many posts were there? I mean exactly 990 posts? If it was PunBB, it has a post count.

well the first half of thread is 990 posts and locked and the rest are however many posts have been made
this has happened on 3 different threads on my forum now. However I know the 990 limit was exceeded because people complained about 40 pages of posts disappearing on a certain date, but the first half in fact was just a couple of pages off the front page because the last post, number 990 was 2 weeks before the actual split happened. this is why I wondered if this was only done once a month on the last sunday of the month in this particular case.

I hope that makes sense.

Count how many posts you have per page, and then count how many pages were made before it was split. Its either the amount of posts that triggers the split or the amount of pages. You can set how may posts per page in the Admin panel, and that will tell the program when to create a new page. The page count might be consistent and what triggers the split.

What you can do with the older topic that has been split and doesn't allow anymore posts to be made in it, is edit the last post in that topic and add a link to the new topic that was created, call it "Part 2" if you want, that way if someone happens upon that thread they can click the link to see the continuation where they can also post a reply in. You can also edit the title of the new topic that was created and add "Part 2" to it.
