HUGE SPIKE in GUEST
http://www.platinumhearts.net/
M'kaay, I'm gonna make this short. We've been noticing a huge spike in the number of vistors on our forum that is way out of the norm. Originally, we had 334 guest on our site today. Now? It's up to about 590, as of typing this, and steadily going up. We normally only have 80 guest on at a time, so I suspect we may be getting ddos'd or someone else suggested bots.
Now, could someone tell me what is going on here? As, by the time I got to this section of the post, it went up to 602.

There's only 3 bots when I checked your site.
If you'd like for it to be secured, in ACP, make sure the confirmation code is on before a member joins in.

Yea, we know of the google bots that always check our site. However, we noticed a surge in guest visiting our site. They haven't really done much, but we're starting to believe it ain't human either. Since, as of this post, it rose to 627 and there is a long list of guest in my admin panel and has been confirmed by other site members.

Re: HUGE SPIKE in GUEST
Check their IP's and it'll redirect you to your map. You can see that if they've got location, they may be human. I browsed your forum, so don't worry, I ain't a bot.
Also, see if putting your forum on holiday for 30 minutes would work and then putting it on back again or make it under construction for 30 minutes. I'm not 100% sure it will though or your forum just got insanely popular.

Yeah, I've checked alot of their IPs, and they all appear to be unique. Some of them appear to be on the map, but not all of them. Which lead us to assume some of them might be bots.
Additionally, we were thinking of temporarily shutting down the site for a few minutes to see if it would ease up the amount of guest suddenly appearing on the site. We've been laughing our asses off about it, but it's starting to get pretty weird at this point.

Re: HUGE SPIKE in GUEST
As I said, put your forum on construction for 30 minutes and see if it'll work. I'm not a forumotion staff so I'm not aware of any inside or outside jobs occurring if ever something like that does happen here.
Re: HUGE SPIKE in GUEST
Well, I can see his point now. I've checked the forum about 4 times and of all those online, none registered. Something might be up like what he said.
Edit: Well, based from my understanding since Lionus was the last one I saw as new registered ._.

Re: HUGE SPIKE in GUEST
Keep in mind bots can not register on your forum and they only gather information that you have open for at least guest to see. So if you have a lot of our forums open for guest to view only. You can always Chang the permissions and bots would not be able to gather the information's, and all though you may see a lot of guest or bots, they would only be on the outside of the forum and not in the main
Well we cant fix something that's not broke, having bots craw his forum or guest appearing is not a problem.
So i dont know what answers he is looking for there is no way to prevent this, All i can say is be sure he has his forums permissions for only members to see. Once again bots can not gather anything they do not have accesses to and can not register.
info added
Well i can say i see 808 guest and that is defiantly out of the ordinary, I think it could being caused by the xat chat, may be try adding the xat chat in side the forum on homepage message or html page, give it a day and see if the numbers are down.

Better yet, have it in a widget, place it in the forum and set the permissions to members and up only.
Re: HUGE SPIKE in GUEST
Do you have google analytics installed? If so you can use that to see what's bringing in the majority of your traffic.
I've sometimes seen massive spikes in guests visiting my forum whenever something in my site happens to make page 1 of search rankings or when a bigger site has linked to mine.

i believe it is forumotion google analytics on all forumotion forums by default.
So not sure if you can even add your one or not? sounds a little off topic but meaning not sure if that would be the problem?

Re: HUGE SPIKE in GUEST
Hi Kirk
No problem from my side at all. I was trying to help the OP figure out where their spike in guests came from.
Google analytics gives a detailed picture of where traffic comes from. I've no idea if forumotion has this by default now but when I joined two years ago it didn't: there's a tutuorial on this site telling you how to add it to a forumotion forum.
