In progress Hidden guests/members

Post by Geezer on February 19th 2013, 11:00 am

Is it possiblet o do way with the " Hidden " part of " members on line " so they can no longer be hidden , the reason for this is I am pretty sure another forum is poaching my members by sending PM,s when on line and hidden . Cheers

There is not a way to stop members from using this option in their profiles. You do know that administrators can see hidden members and moderators if you have the option checked for them.

I also advise to your members to report such private messages if they receive any.

I think Administrators can automatically see hidden users. They'll appear normally in the "online" area.

Lastly,

Put an announcement to encourage members to report people abusing the private message system, then you can ban or disabled PMs on that members account.

Right lets start again . In the field " Statistics " there is " who is online " under this is " Members " 500 " Hidden " 5 " " Guests " 2000 . Is it possible to get rid of the " Hidden " part so no one can hide . If this is not possible then how can you see this hidden members name , so youcan get that much closer to banning his sorry *** for poaching without permission . At the moment I have " Allow moderators to see the hidden users : I have this bocked " Yes "
What I want to know is , where do I look for these hidden members names ?
I hope this helps .

Hidden members' usernames will appear like this in the Who's Online section - SLGray (italicized).

They should look like this as SLGray said, in italics. See "betty swollocks", "Gypsy", Blyth Spirit".

Have you exactly see a private message from a hidden member? I mean has a member reported one.

The only way to get rid of allowing this option would be to remove the whole option from your template.

You can only do this with phpbb2 or punn, you wold basically be removing the whole option out of the template, and no one including staff would be able to be invisible.

I actually have removed it from most of my forums, but do not know anyway of doing it with phpbb3 or invision.

then you would have to edit the who,s online section as well and remove where it says hidden

There really isn't a way to stop users hiding on Invision, as far as I know.

They're different forum softwares as far as I am aware you can fully customize nearly ever aspect of Phpbb2 and punn where as with PHPBB3 is a little different and so is invision, you cannot customize the general template fully whereas with Phpbb2 you can.

Well I am not too knowledgeable in this area as I haven't used either board except Invision and then I was only posting on it. Phpbb2 allows full customization of your template. However you'd need to probably get a new forum theme as the one you'll be using is likely designed for Invision. Invision is more powerful (so I've heard) from various people and is better than Phpbb2 for very very very large communities. You also (I think) get more built in options with Invision.

Overall switching for this one thing, would I recommend it? No as its a whole different forum experience and outlook. I would just try catching this guy with the tips from above or banning his IP by checking his posts. Also if he is doing this via PM then ask your community to report his username to you. I don't see why they wouldn't.

You could create an announcement about it and I'm sure they'll report him.

Also try googeling "Phbb2 vs Invision" and you'll get several responses filled with information.

This can help.

However, I don't think it would be possible to hide the invisible members.
