User Names Already Taken on brand new forum
Hello,
I just created http://motocafe.forumotion.com/ a few days ago and have been bringing in new members from an old forum I'm shutting down.
Three of the new members have reported that they could not use the user name they originally wanted. They were given an error message about that user name being already taken.
This is completely untrue for my forum.
I'm confused as to why a user name is "taken" when it's not.
The names people wanted to use were simple and not obscene. For example, Zen, Lola, and Lunablu. These names are not taken by anyone else at my forum, but that's the error message they received.
Can you tell me why?
Thanks,
Motokid

Thanks for the immediate reply.
No. Nothing in "inactive users".
They were able to register, but they had to pick a different user name.
I wonder if the old forum they were coming from has anything to do with it? They could have still been logged in at old phpBB forum while trying to register at my new forumotion forum.
They were trying to keep their user name form the old forum.
Could that be part of the problem?

Also check to see if you've added any username censoring under General--Censoring.
I once was a member of a forum and I wanted my username to be Assassin but they had the word "[Language]" censored and this blocked my entire username.

I'll try that. Thanks.
Hard to believe "Lunablu" would be a name that would be on that list.

If they have an account in some other name why not just go in your acp and change it there and see if you still get the problem your self if you do then we could ask a tech to have a look or as
This says :
Give them 2 steps a try and get back to us
Ape
This says :
But if that was the problem then there is something wrong also as it should say that you can not use that name as its on the black list or some thing along that line. Its because of this then.

Re: User Names Already Taken on brand new forum
So I sort of "fixed" the issue by allowing my new members to "change their screen names" from their own profile once they've registered.
So in the end - the problem may or may not be fixed at this time, but there's a solution to allowing new members to pick any user name they want after they've become a member.
Thanks for the help.
