In progress Suspicious activity has been detected on an account

Post by Brooksy118 March 21st 2013, 2:43 am

Hopefully someone can help me with this issue.

A user on my forum has contacted me to say he is getting a message when he tries to sign in, stating that suspicious activity has been detected on his account - his message is below:

I have tried signing into the forum and I get a message that suspicious activity has been detected on my account and asking me to complete a webpage on onlineguardian.net.

I'm always a bit dubious of things like that, but did a bit of googling and it seemed ok, but can't get past it.

I've searched on here and it seems to be a common issue, could somebody advise how we resolve it please?

Thanks Smile

Hi,

Is this what he is referring?

I don't normally see this happening to a member's account. It normally happens to a forum.

I'm not entirely sure what he's seeing, it sounds like a bit like that, but he's the only member, everybody else is accessing the forum fine. And his wife is able to access it ok too, as he pm'd me from her account!

Let the user know to provide a screenshot of his issue. Have you tried changing his password?

Some other FM forums have also had this problem. There are some other threads on here about this.
I had the same problem on my forum but after I changed the usernames of the members who were blocked they were able to log in again.
So first you could try changing the username and see if that works.

If not you need to PM Leeloo with both the username and email address of the users who are blocked and she can unblock them.

I have noticed that Online Guardian the anti-spam plugin seems to block some usernames that are used a lot by other users on other sites. For example common usernames such as John or Jane for example.
So one thing you could do which may help avoid this problem in the future, is advise users to pick a username that is unique rather than one that everybody else uses.

I haven't tried anything with the account yet, I wanted to see if it was a known issue - I've asked them to send me a screenshot Smile

Thanks for the info, I'll see what the screenshot says and then if necessary I'll PM Leeloo and see if she can help Smile

Well first you should try changing the members username, see if that works.
If that does not, then you will have to go to Leeloo.
Then she will be able to unblock the members account.
See this thread here that I took part in a few weeks ago from another member who had the same problem. It explains it better than I can.
