In progress User Group Issues

Okay so what i wanted to do was make a group the members automatically become a part of when they register. And it seems whenever i try to manage this it wont let me, i made a new group called (Auditioning) for new members but i have no idea how to make all new members join it without having to do it manually.

I tried to edit the 'Member' group itself but i cant. And whenever i uncheck a box for the member group in permissions all the other boxes for other groups get unchecked as well.

Alright now new members join that group but i still cant seem to get the permissions right. A lot of them i cant check or uncheck, like the permissions for members. If i uncheck 1 thing for them it unmarks everything for the other groups. And i cant edit the (Auditioning) Permissions.

Once you create a new member group, change the permissions for that group.
Uncheck everything for the default member group.
