A Small Suggestion - Aiding members in taking a Screenshot

Post by Derri on May 10th 2013, 3:02 am

I had trouble coming up with a title haha,

While viewing the vast amount of tutorials that forumotion offer I came across this tutorial for how to take a screenshot (Click Here to View).

Quite often a moderator of either graphic design or support require members to post a screenshot and while most people can comply with this without any problems, not all are computer literate or know how to take a screenshot on the system they are using. Now the problem with members not knowing how, is that quite often it delays support moderators from helping or delays the graphic designers from completing requests. It does also have other minor drawbacks as well.

So I, with some help came up with a few possible suggestions that could be used in order to inform members of the tutorial above.

  • Create a widget with a link on how to create a screenshot and display the widget on the right hand side so moderators just have to point the member to the widget itself.

  • You could create a shortcut link and display it in an existing widget or if possible, the "Shortcuts" widget. So again, all the moderator needs to do is point them in the right direction.

  • It could be added it as a keyword in the "Keywords" widget.

I feel by implementing one of the methods stated above or a different method this might help instruct a member on how to successfully take a screenshot. It will also aid staff as they can easily direct members to look at said widget or keyword when they require a member to post a screenshot.

More over, this idea came from watching many members not post a screenshot in the graphics request section when requesting a graphic and while I know more over this is because they just ignore or choose to not read the rules or follow instructions, a small portion are likely to have not have done so because they aren't sure how to post a screenshot.

Please vote in the poll above and leave a comment on what you think of this suggestion. Also if you can think of another method that could be useful in aiding members on taking a screenshot then please share. thumright

Derri, I think your suggestion is valid as I deal with this issue almost everyday and a link or widget on the side of the forum should not be a big deal to do. I'm voting yes.

I remember the 1st time being asked to take a a screenshot. The fact i hadn't a clue what one was let alone how to take one ,left me feeling helpless and a bit "put on the spot".I was embarrassed ,though i know it wasn't the staffs intent. I never ended up getting the problem resolved as a result.. It wasn't until just recent and with the help of my wife, that i was finally able to do such a task. Even with the text TUT available to me, i wasn't able to figure it out on my own. With that said... i find this to be a brilliant idea and am pleased that someone(Derri) has brought it to light. You have my support on this. thumright

Will this do?

Voted Yes.

I think this'd be very helpful for newcomers to computer technology.

When you actually add it, Sanket, may I add that Lightshot.exe is an excellent tool for inexperienced members, and that I think that it should be mentioned? Wink

Yup I agree! Many members are not providing screenshot of their problem when it needs to be provided. This might help the staff and members a lot. Smile
