Post by Messengers of Hope May 21st 2013, 5:57 pm

Okay, so I am a newbie so to speak. I used forums for communication a long time ago. I now need to use it again. I have a group on FB that helps people in need in our area, and I am wanting to move the group OFF of facebook and into a forum. FB groups don't give us a good way to seperate out posts, like forums do. The forum facebook does provides (I only know of one) is extremely limited in what it offers. Besides that, not everyone is on FB, and we need to reach those who are not.

I set up a few different test forums, trying to figure out what I need, and then came across forumotion. I need help figuring out which type of forum is going to be best for me and my group. Invision, Phpbb 2 or 3, punbb....

NEEDS:
collapse the forum categories
create subforums
upload photos to posts as well as photo gallery, not just links
a calendar, with reoccuring events
mobile friendly
ability to set some forums open for guests, and others private for members, and yet others secret for a few members
ability to let members choose which topics they would like to "subscribe" to, or be "notified" about
ability to set different user ranks, custom titles, etc

** I saw on one forum i tested, where you could make multiple calendars, that would be useful for us, but seems it is not a widespread option.

how do i without testing them all, decide which forum platform is best for us?

any advice, soundboarding, etc, would be appreciated very much. thank you!

All versions have the same features.

There are some exceptions:

PunBB & PhpBB 2 are the only two that allow template editing.

Invision's memberlist looks different. Also there is a drop-down profile menu in messages

I would use punBB since you said "mobile friendly", punBB is graphically a lightweight and takes little to no time loading on a mobile phone in the full version.

By default, forumotion comes with a mobile version, but some features are limited to the desktop version.

Thank you for the response! I am absolutely loving that I can easily switch between versions! Have been playing around a bit today with it, and right now am liking Invision, but, I have not checked it on my phone yet.

The ONLY 2 questions I have right now....

Is there a way to do re-occuring events in the calendar?
Can users pick their own themes to use?

What exactly do you mean by re-occurring event?

Which one is best for our needs? Event_calendar_recurring

you can put the same event in a calendar, once, but to occur multiple times. so, if you have something going on every single monday, you can tell the calendar it will be every monday, instead of having to manually add it in for each monday.

hope that and the pic makes sense...

thanks for the help btw Smile

Hello,

I don't think we have that option, you can read more about the calendar here:

Thank you, I didn't think it was an option.

Forgive me, I am not exactly sure how mods and custom edit type things work...but is it possible to "install" somehow a calendar like the one I am needing? Maybe somehow I can put in my google calendar or a calendar widget of some sort that would have those features? Is is something I would do in the css?

Any advice would be appreciated Smile

Anything that is HTML or JavaScript can be added to the forum. However, you cannot install something directly. You can use a widget or something?
