Porn pop ups again Empty Porn pop ups again

Post by Wallflower August 15th 2013, 4:18 pm

Hello. We are still having this issue on our forum. We currently have about 120 active users and 20% of those have had a porn pop up. The images are disturbing and are popping up randomly when changing thread (no specific threads!) and even when opening personal messages. These are happening on a range of devices.

We discovered that by making posters moderators the this solves the problem as admins/mods do not get the advert banner at the top of the page.  This, however, is clearly not a solution. We cannot make our entire board of posters all moderators!

I have several screenshots as evidence which I can send to whomever replies here.

Our forum address is the birdsandthebs.forumotion.net and it's a pregnancy, baby and parenting forum. I hope you can help. Thanks.

Do you mean images popping up or just links?

Images are popping up. The page automatically reloads to another page of 'local sl*gs' for example.

I am assure you that this is not the case with our users. Certainly not such a high percentage on iPads/devices that are used by family and children! People have tried clearing their history/cookies and what not and it has not made a difference.

We have been here before - this is the third time we've asked for help. So far, though, we haven't got anywhere.

My thoughts are you should consider paying to have your ads removed for all members. Those ads you speak of are most likely originating from google ads. That's assuming you don't have any widgets creating the ads or your members don't have any kind of malware on their computers. Those ads you speak of are approved by google, so obviously your definition of "porn" is not the same as theirs, if in fact they are coming from google, and I think they are.

Have you added any third party coding recently as sometimes they can contain hidden ad links that can cause pop ups.

Runaway, thanks. There is no way we will suggest our members pay to remove ads. We are a tiny parenting support forum and that just doesn't sit right with our ethos. Especially when we can avoid it by making them all Moderators. Which, like I said, is far from ideal.

We have 'view last posts since previous visit' - is that a widget?

Derri, we're very much untechnical forum owners and so the answer to weather we've added coding is definitely no!

You don't need to suggest anything or involve your members to remove the ads, its a small payment that the Admin makes that effects the entire forum.

Yes the "last posts since previous visit" is a forumotion widget and would not be producing the ads. I think we can safely say the ads on your forum are originating from Google and are google approved.

You can remove them from the Administration Panel by clicking the tab "Misc" then "spend credits". Although you need to buy credits first to be able to spend any. All the info you need is in that section.

Thank you. So the admins pay for credits? Hmm, can't see us happy with that! We're a forum of mummies with only five admins who are mostly elected every so often. It sounds like making those who've had the pop ups Moderators is the only way of solving this for free...

Well whoever has access to the Admin panel will have to make the transaction, who actually pays for it is your concern..lol

Yes that's the only way to remove the ads for everyone.

Is this topic solved?

If they are Forumotion ads then I was told that Forumotion would remove them if they're inappropriate as that's what I was told when I brought up the discussion of inappropriate ads almost a year ago.

I heard just the opposite, that they are not forumotion ads but rather google ads, and forumotion doesn't control them, and cannot weed them out for peoples particular taste.

Its my understanding forumotion doesn't have ads that they generate personally, they are all google ads.

This was a little of a rant I went on about inappropriate ads (I feel bad about how blunt I acted)

https://help.forumotion.com/t109842-appropriate-ads

I was told by LeeLoo and Kirk that if they have pornographic ads or ads that are explicit or violate the forumotion TOS that Forumotion will act to remove them.

This policy might have changed from over a year ago but that's what I was told.

Yes of course forumotion would act on anything breaking the TOS, but google is not doing that by their standards or forumotions. If you see an ad that is breaking the TOS by all means report it as suggested in that topic, by sending the url in question to them, but when they look at it they will find google is not breaking the TOS so therefore forumotion won't act on it. Those "fake" ads you were complaining about didn't do a bit of good did it? No because they weren't breaking the TOS. Google is not in the habit of breaking anyones TOS and putting ads where they don't belong, the type of ads chosen by forumotion from google ad-sense are considered to be in the right category. But they can protest by sending the links for what good it will do them.
