You made a few errors with the selectors so I corrected them for you. I also removed display/position and replaced them with visibility and margin. Try the code in your CSS below and see if it works.
Code:
.mainmenu[href="/faq"], .mainmenu[href="/groups"], .mainmenu[href="/search"], .mainmenu[href="/memberlist"]{
  visibility:hidden;
  margin:-38px;
}
Do remember to remove your old code.

Adjust the amount of 'margin:-38px;' to reduce/increase the size of the gap until its to your liking.

Since you're using only images in the navbar there is no need to remove them from sight via CSS. Remove the CSS code I've supplied and navigate to..
Admin Panel > Display > Pictures and Colors > Pics management > Advanced

And remove the images that correspond to the links you wish to remove.

Okay..I think this should do it. Put this in your CSS and tell me if there are any gaps.

Code:
.mainmenu{
margin-left:-0.7px;
}

Go to AP>>Display>>Headers & Navigation>>

On that page use the green arrows on the left to move anything between the Search and Register all the way to the top of the list.

Do that with any buttons that have a gap, you want nothing in between each button that should be showing.
