Small Issue (or maybe question) regarding the toolbar Empty Small Issue (or maybe question) regarding the toolbar

Post by Derri Thu 1 Aug 2013 - 3:07

I've seen this on all forumotion forums I've been on.

Sometimes when I'm viewing the forums the toolbar doesn't display my notifications number and the notifications drop down list doesn't display my notifications, it just drops down and says "View notifications" then after more refreshes it goes back to normal.

I was wondering if this was an issue or maybe a loading issue?

Not really sure, so I thought I'd ask.

Hey Derri,

This isn't an issue I've heard of as yet, have you tried clearing the cookies?
I'm thinking it' a clash of the cookies, and want to start with the basic troubleshooting.

I do think perhaps it is an issue with cookies but the problem is, me clearing my cookies and cache etc every time this happens isn't exactly a viable solution. I've also heard its happening with a few other people as well, that suddenly they can't load and receive notifications and then all of a sudden they can.

It seems to be me like a much more serious issue as its happening frequently. I don't rely on the toolbar for much, just PM notifications and Friend Requests etc but for those who do rely on it more heavily this would be somewhat problematic.

Was the issue resolved when u cleared the cookies, or does it continue to persist?

Well it wasn't working when I read your message, I cleared my cookies and then closed my browser and reopened it, came on here and it was back to normal.

However me clearing my cookies every single time this happens isn't a solution in my eyes because to put it in a rather blunt fashion it is a pain in the backside to do that every time the notifications drop down system doesn't work.

Therefore I'm assuming its an error within the toolbar which is causing some kind of cookie clash (I don't know the technical way of putting it)

I mean according to this http://www.avacweb.com/t899-the-forumotion-toolbar-about-it-and-a-few-tips-and-tricks

(Not sure how accurate that is)

The toolbar does seem to use an awful lot of cookie resources.

So I'm wondering what can be done to solve this issue other than clearing my cookies every time it happens.

I've never once had this issue and I'm on this forum a lot, and my forum has the toolbar also, and I have all the notifications ticked on. Its not uncommon for me to have 200+ notifications at one time loaded in the toolbar, and it works perfectly. So it leads me to believe its your connection or your computer issue.

I would try deleting all your notifications on a weekly basis if you haven't tried that already, but I do not think anything is wrong with the toolbar. I would suggest looking to your computer for the problem.

The only notifications I have set is when a private message has been received so and I delete my notifications once I've checked them. It's not only me that's had this issue I know of one other person who's experienced this.

The reason I don't think it is me is because no other notification system on any other type of forum has an issue, only on forumotion and I haven't had any other issues with my cookies on any other forum. Only forumotion.

Before I go further in my research:
Is it specifically you on one device, or are your members also having this?

The toolbar does use alot of cookies yes TT

Also, when this happens, do you know of the notifications from another message (ie email) and refresh the page, or are you not refreshing the page?

I haven't asked my members because I've never noticed it on my forum, only the support forum.

I don't understand your last question.

See the problem I have is that it has a way of not loading the notifications then you refresh your browser or come back later and it can be there. Then other times it doesn't come back and I have to clear my cookies in order to get it working again.

I did know someone who had this issue but they haven't had it since they first told me which was a few weeks ago.

So, just to confirm, it's specific to this support forum, and no-other forumotion forum?

I am going to go down the line of using the command prompt to check that everything is OK on your machine before we go and change things:

If you go to: Windows > Start > Search box > Type in 'cmd' it will come to a black box window, type the following in it:
'Ping 74.86.145.74' then hit enter
If you receive the message after about 1 min: Sent 4, received 0, loss 100 %
Please try this: 'Ping google.com'
You should then come back with: Sent 4, received 4, Loss 0;
If so, lets try to re new the adaptors:
Type in: ipconfig /renew

then clear your cookies again and let me know if it's working again Smile
