Chatbox Advice
I've been thinking over and over again, whether I should remove the chatbox from my forum or just leave it there. I feel as if it's a distraction that is keeping members from posting. So I need your help/advice.Of course there are some pros and cons on keeping the chatbox and removing it, but I want your opinion on it.
Do you guys have a chatbox on your forum? Did you remove it? Why?

Re: Chatbox Advice
I know exactly how you feel! My chatbox is definitely keeping my members from posting. I know I can't remove it though, the chatbox is pretty much why most people come on my site. No, actually it IS why. Removing my chatbox would be like killing my site xP I'm not sure how your site is, but one of the members on my site had a good idea. Maybe you can have the chatbox open only on certain days. Don't remove it completely, or else members might quit. You can see if the chatbox being removed increases the posts and activity of your site. If it just makes more members leave, then I wouldn't continue removing it on certain days/hours. But maybe the chatbox being gone will increase the activity of the forum. You can always put a chat thread on the forum, it defeats the purpose of getting people to actually post, but members getting posts on a chat thread is better then getting posts on nothing.
Here's another suggestion I got from a member, but I don't know if it's possible. You can limit the chatbox to members who have at least X amount of posts, or you can say that members have to make a certain amount of posts a month or week in order to use the chatbox that month/week. I think it's a good idea, it would just be a little hard to manage, depending on how many active members you have. Like I said, it might not even be possible.
Hope I helped! And I'm glad someone else out there has the same distracting chatbox situation as me xP

Re: Chatbox Advice
I have a very active community--members that both post and only visit the chatbox. I keep my chatbox, because although it may keep some of my members from posting, it also keeps others who aren't interested in my forum theme there.
Additionally, I've always believed that if something is a hindrance in your goals--make it an asset. Use your chatbox to your benefits--what do you want members to talk about on the board in posts? Ask them to post in chat, post up forum events and announce it in chat.
Give people interest and incentives in posting that they won't get in chat--and use the chat to accentuate that. If you do this, you'll have a forum that can benefit all and increase your forum post count.

Re: Chatbox Advice
I think having a chatbox is an easier way for forum members to connect, and might keep some people posting who otherwise wouldn't. I wanted to know though, is there a way so you don't need to log in to view whats written on the chatbox? as well as the archives being automatically open? I can't seem to find a way. What i was looking for was a chatbox that automatically saves last x number of posts for people to see and you dont need to log in or press archives to see older posts. If there is a way please let me know
good luck with your forums

Re: Chatbox Advice
jwest54, you can put cbox on your forum. A simple way to chat, to see older messages. You put it in your widget. I won't give you the link, just write in Google: CBOX, sign up, design it, get the code, put it on your forum widgets and enjoy. I hope I helped ^^
Re: Chatbox Advice
Generally when I start up a forum I don't keep the chatbox around, I'll maybe use it for one to two weeks and then I'll stop having it around. If my community is active then I'll consider keeping it for social purposes but if the topics themselves aren't being posted in at all then I'll remove it. I'll even make a "conversation thread" where members can talk and post random thoughts, this gives them the encouragement to post and once they get into the habit of posting I then bring it back.

I think the chat box is good if you have a strong forum. Like lots of members always getting on.

I can relate, on a forum I'm a member of the members really wanted one and it was given to them and nobody ever uses it.
