Solved Search bar in my way streamlining my board.

Post by Guest on November 8th 2013, 2:21 am

Hi all!

I want some (non-urgent) help with my following issue. I'm trying to streamline my website here, for moblie devices mostly. I found an element (see screenshot) which I don't know how to remove, and I really wanna get rid of it. My website: http://www.game-xtreme.com

Thanks for looking into this. If you need to gain admin access (forumotion staff only), please drop me a PM.

Regards,

Samantha.

PS: I don't want the search functionality to be gone. And I still want members to be able to use search in my bottom bar, which is only visible as a member.

Hello SamanthaS,

Try this in your CSS:
Code:
p.nomargin{
display:none;
}

Oh, that simple? Thank you! Yeah, that got it done, but something's still bugging me. Take a look at my site using a mobile. Something's on the right widget bar eating up space there. I don't know what it is!

Update: I got Dion's "Latest Topics" installed, invisible to guests btw. May that cause any problem? The rest of the widgets are hidden to guests.

I just had a look, is this in a widget?

That space will only display if a widget in the column is displayed. If all are hidden to guests the reserved space for widgets will not show.

Yea, Dungeon Sales is my webshop. It's on the right, using a DIV. Here's the code:

<center><a href="http://www.game-xtreme.com/h3-dungeon-shop" target="”_blank;"><img src="https://i14.servimg.com/u/f14/17/68/63/00/gamext12.jpg" width="525"></a></center>

What should I change to make it look smart on mobiles now?

PS: There's another widget using the same trick:

<center><a href="http://www.facebook.com/groups/mariokartwiitournaments/" target="”_blank;"><img src="https://i55.servimg.com/u/f55/17/68/63/00/180x4011.jpg" width="180"></a></center>

The only thing that I think would need correction on there is this:
Code:
target="”_blank;"

to

target="_blank"
Other than that its perfect Very good

Since that is a widget, that is why you're seeing that space. Perhaps you should add a widget to the right that stays in the column for guests only? Like the log in widget, then just edit the privileges:

Darn. Didn't help changing the "blank" thingy. Let's see what happens on mobile devices when I add a widget on the right and left side. BRB with you in a min.

UPDATE: Nope, back to square one there, except for the search bar which is gone and that's good. The rest of the forum will not spread across the mobile screen 100%, being eaten away by the right pane (widget bar). If I add more widgets to it, the whole forum gets pushed downwards, leaving me with both widgets left and right a huge whitespace in the middle.

Okay, so you just want to remove that extra white-space to the right for logged out users correct?

I think so. Everything beyond the DIV will show up at the bottom of the page. I still want the shop and fb link to be visible to guests tho.

Well, from my test with the script I put together the stuff you have on the bottom seemed to stay.

Add this to your Javascripts:
Administration Panel > Modules > HTML & JAVASCRIPT > Javascript codes management

Create a new script,

Name: what you wish
tick 'in all the pages'

paste the code below, and save.
Code:
$(function() {
if(!document.getElementById('logout')) {
$('#content-container div#right').css('display', 'none');
$('#content-container div#content').css('margin-right', '0px');
}});
This should remove the white space for only logged out users.

Understood. You're a very good GREAT help. I'll try it now and come back to you with the results.

UPDATE: YAAAY! You're magic! Nearly there. Forumotion bar still showing the other width lol at the top. If it's not too much trouble you might have a quick fix for that too. Excellent!

By 'Forumotion bar' do you mean the toolbar or did I miss something?

Hmm.. It displays fine for me.

Its fixed so the browser window should set its overall size by expanding to the left and right sides.

But try this and see if it does anything for you:
Code:
#fa_toolbar{
left:0 !important;
right:0 !important;
}
If not could you provide a screenshot of what you're seeing?

Hmm... that didn't change it. I can't provide you with a screenshot either I'm afraid. It's happening on my iPhone. What I see is the rest of the forum being spread out on the screen, but the toolbar is shrunk, ranging from left to the letter E in my banner, leaving a white space beyond to the right side. All of the toolbar IS visible however.

Please, understand. Because of time zones I really need to sleep now. It's almost 4:30 am here. Thanks for your awesome help so far. I'll be responding to any further posts in this thread as soon as possible.

Oh, I see so its like the toolbar is affected by the right column?

Seeing as your toolbar is fixed it should span the screen size, it may be a mobile issue. Nevertheless we can try the same trick we did to expand the content container.

We'll try reducing the right margin to 0. If that does not work I believe there might not be a way to resolve this right now.

Add to CSS:
Code:
#fa_toolbar{
margin-right:0px !important;
}

I'm sorry. That didn't work. I tried width:100% as well in CSS, set "Fix the toolbar :" in the toolbar configuration to "No", but still negative.

Hmm..

See if this works:
Code:
@media screen and (max-device-width: 480px) {
 #fa_toolbar { width:110%; }
}
Adjust the width to something outrageous(like 200%) if it doesn't work the first time. The code above should only be read by iPhones.
