Completed Group Administration

Post by runawayhorses on December 7th 2013, 9:16 pm

Hi, I posted a question a few weeks ago that was answered and then locked, however I've found a problem with the solution. Please refer to this topic here I am referring to:

http://help.forumotion.com/t128504-group-administration

And I tried Sanket's and Seth's answer and it worked, but with one important catch, it seems the users
in the default Members group where you have taken away permissions to post in a particular forum, when they post in a forum you are allowing them to post in, they are automatically added to the "New Member" group that has auto subscribes set at 0 posts where in that group they can post anywhere on the forum.

To better understand this read here http://help.forumotion.com/t128504-group-administration

So in short, what's happening is the member you remove from the "New Members" group where they can post anywhere, are automatically added to the list again when they make a post in a forum they have permissions to post in.

Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks

Well, if you are removing anyone from the New Members group you need to add him to a different group with restricted permissions. I think thats what you are asking.

I just tried that Sanket I'm using a test account, I created another group and put the user name in it, checked to make sure the permissions for that group didn't allow the user to post in the sections I chose, and when the user tries to post in those sections he is forbidden to post in the forum, it indeed blocks them, that worked fine, then when he tries to post in a section he is allowed to post in that works fine too, however after that first post he can now post in all the other forums he was minutes ago blocked from because after he makes a first post hr is added back to the "New Member" group. Apparently the "New Member" group has priority over everything and overrides the old members group and the new group with restrictions you just now suggested to make. I can't keep a member from being added to the "New Member" group with auto subscribes set at 0 posts because once he makes a post the forum updates and adds them to that group, and that group is overriding everything else.

I believe you can not use the auto-subscribe option with what you want to achieve. You will have to manually add and remove members from the groups.

Well, I ended up having to ban them so I marked this topic complete, although I never could set permissions for a member.

It would be nice if the forums were easier to set permissions for each individual member if you needed to. Like click a members name and have boxes by each forum you can untick.

thanks for your help anyway.
