Solved Username has already been taken?

Post by RobertSF January 12th 2014, 2:05 am

My users are getting that error message. I only started the forum a week ago, and only have a dozen users. I can see the names being tried are NOT taken. If they add an X or some numbers to the name they're trying to register, then it works ok. Also, if they register with whatever name takes, I am able to edit their username back to what they wanted.

The forum is http://openhearts.forumotion.com

Try the name "Blood" for example. The name "Miles" wasn't working, but he finally registered as Milesx and I changed him to just "Miles," so you can't use "Miles" to check, as the username is indeed taken by now.

What's going on?

Its a common feature to do with the built in spam feature Forumotion has.

Go to ACP --> General --> Security --> Unauthorize subscriptions made with the most commonly used spam usernames --> No --> Save

Thank you. I clicked the "thanks" button because your help was accurate.

But it's a terrible feature. The help for that feature says that it blocks names like "Cheap Cialis" and "Viagra." If it also blocks common names like "Miles," then people will turn the feature off, and it won't block any spam.

Well to be honest, the spam feature isn't perfect and spam is really easy to deal with in the first place. I mean a quick few clicks and you can have the content deleted and the person banned or even deleted in the ACP.

However it would appear that this option does bring a few issues such as certain common names being blocked. You'll find now that members won't have a problem any more.
