Default Gender Profile Options

Post by Guest on Thu Feb 13, 2014 3:49 am

First topic message reminder :

Hello!

I propose that we should be able to edit the default gender profile field!  Currently, if you want to use a custom field, you have to use coding to hide the default field completely and then make a new one with the gender profile options that you desire.  However, I think it would far simpler if we did not have to use coding to have this feature, because I believe that it is important to allow more options for gender roles.

I honestly do not believe that the simple terms of "male" or "female" really relates to every person that joins a forum, these days.  Many are transgendered, have a different gender identity than their biological identity, and other such situations.  I have seen from personal experience how having such limited gender options can really deter members from either joining one's forum or even opening up about themselves on the forum and becoming a bit secluded out of fear of not being accepted into the community due to their "different gender standards."

Additionally, I have had several members choose a profile gender and then decide they do not wish to have their gender known later--but they cannot change it and go back to not having a gender once it has been selected.  It would also be extremely helpful if we could make it so that they can have that reverted, or instead, have an "unknown gender/undisclosed gender" option.

I think we should be open to all, welcoming to all, and show it proudly!  My forum even has multiple options, which has been welcomed with delight by my members:

Unknown
Male
Female
Transgender
Other

PLEASE Note This Part:
**I am not saying that this option is for everyone, but it should be customizable for those that do want this option and those that do not want these additional features should also be able to keep it as "male" and "female" only to suit their preferences as an admin of their own forums.**

What do you think?

Don't forget Walrus. I'm pretty sure I need that as a gender option.

Bumping this.

There is no harm in this feature and if added there wouldn't be any discrimination in that field.

@Leah7 its ironic and very funny but i had this same idea lol and i voted yes because i know members wont identify themselves as either male nor female its hard for them to speak to everyone stating they are transgendered so good post!

Good suggestion! But, why not just remove the asteriskos, that would give a user 3 options.
I vote NO

The asterisk is a mandatory gender field when registering. Removed the asterisk and now you have a 3rd option for users male female n/a. Is gender that important? most posters respond to the forum topics.

Yes people can choose between Gender and it can seem unimportant but what if you were transgender and the options were male and female and you wanted to select an option that wasn't there? Or what if you wanted to pick your Birthday but Forumotion didn't allow you to choose March and December? It would be weird right?

I hear what your saying. But, were do these suggestions end. If approved, I suppose we'll see follow suggestions like, can we ad Ms, Mrs, Mr,... I believe that the Forumotion staff are very busy with more important suggestions and they are doing a fantastic job with the current workload.

Just give them time to evaluate the suggestion.

Just to reply and add one more thing.

The reason this suggestion is highly wanted is because you cannot remove the default options without code. If it were to be fixed this suggestion would be complete. Any follow suggestions would not occur because you can add Mrs., Mr., Ms, by making a new profile field as there is no profile field for it already.

@Forumedic I really appreciate your suggestions and conversation on an interesting topic.
Bottom line (my opinion ) is I have to agree with SLGRAY(Pg1) "why not just have a way to edit the gender profile"

Voted YES only for this reason: in some countries and regions, like the EU and it's countries within, law prescribes that because of protection of personal data and fundamental rights like gender equality, collecting gender data and processing is only legitimate in some cases. I can only support adding more options, like even a 'No Choice' option as a standard. I see removing the option 'Gender' as a profile option on one's board as a last resort or workaround.

That's the most effective way of treating the the issue. I believe we all respond to the topics, not the gender of the poster.
