In progress Can Too Many Smiles Slow Forum?

Post by Glad E Olah March 9th 2014, 3:17 am

The members of my forum enjoy smiles.  I have a lot.  Some are small some are a bit larger than you have here.

Lately the forum seems slower than normal and some of the smiles take a longer period of time to load.

Can we have too many installed or does size slow them down?

Thanks and may I post my link here?

Hello ^^

Smilies are nothing else than pictures. That means we need to load them the first time we access the page. Next times it will load faster because they are already memorized by the browser.

So size does matter. Faster to load default smilies than 64 kb smilies. And faster to load a page without smilies than a page containing a lot of them.

Thank you so much.  Your answer may be the one needed.

I will continue to check my thread often but will not reply to all replies until several are made.

I appreciate the answers.

Large images does take longer to load than small images. If you have large smileys in one post then yes it would take longer to load than a post with no smileys.

As long as the size of your emoticons are low, they should load fairly quick. However, if they're large files they can take some time to load. Once they're loaded they should be cached, so the next time you visit the page the smilies will display without loading.

Thanks but I am not exactly understanding what is meant by cached.

I will begin to delete some of the larger smiles to see if that helps.

Image are loaded the first time and stored on your computer somewhere in the memory of your browser.
If you visit the same page with the same browser, it will display it withoud need of donwload it first.

If you make Ctrl+F5 you force your browser to load all images, instead of using cached ones.

I removed the larger smiles and yet still a delay in them loading.

I don't think it is a slow computer issue because many members are complaining about the slow.

Is there a way of disabling part of the smiles to test?  I really prefer not to have to reload the smiles but I will if I have to.

You can disable temporarily here :
Administration panel > Messages and e-mails > configuration

Find 'Allow Smilies', tick 'no' and save.
