Fixed or Static widget column

Post by Bignuggs on May 6th 2014, 4:01 am

Here goes.  I have 4 widgets in the right side column.  when I open a forum to view the posts and scroll down the page, I would like the widgets to be in view at all times.  Hope that makes sense.
How do I change to widget column to be in a fixed position and independent from the main forum column/page.
Here's my URL

Okay. Very Happy

Apply this code to your CSS Stylesheet.

Code:
#content-container div#left {
position: fixed;
top: 0;
left: 0;
overflow: visible;
overflow-x: visible;
height: 100%;
}
.bodylinewidth {
margin-left: 180px;
}

Let me know if it works or not. Thanks in advance.

I've got dumb question to ask about this.  do I just copy and paste that code into the CSS sheet.
If you see the attached image there is already some short code in the sheet.
do I just place the new code in there with it ? or do I have to create a new CSS page ?

Hello,

You just need to paste it there below the current CSS codes and save. Smile

It doesn't accept the code.  I got an error message.  I tried removing some of the "{" & "}" but still no go.  any and all suggestions are welcome.

We have counted a different number of "{" and of "}". It means your CSS risks to be not valid and will not be posted correctly on your forum.

This is the CSS sheet with the new code.  The first 3 lines were already there for something else.  Sorry if I'm posting too much and being a pest.

Hi Very Happy

In line 4, you did not add a { after div#left . By the way, is that a percentage value? If so, please remove that.

I deleted the CSS that was in the sheet and pasted in the new.  It accepted the code this time but unfortunately, the widget column still doesn't scroll/float down with the main forum page.
Thanks for your help.  if it's ok, maybe leave this thread active for a think tank on how to get it working.

Cheers & Many thanks

Hi Very Happy

No wonder why it didn't work. Your widgets are on the right, LOL. Please try this one:

Code:
#content-container div#right
  position: fixed !important;
  top: 0;
  right: 0;
  overflow: visible;
  overflow-x: visible;
}

Re: Fixed or Static widget column

Post by Bignuggs on May 8th 2014, 5:05 pm

Hi All

Well I tried both the new CSS codes offered and still no go.  If I change the "div#left" to "div#right", it moves the widget column to the left side of the forum and it messes with the page layout.
I tried some mix an match with both the new CSS, it gets accepted and no error message but still no scroll.
with the new CSS loaded in, one thing that did change was the headerbar height.  I had to up it to 470px or the banner pic was pushed into the menu bar.
If you want to keep playing with the CSS, that's fine with me or you can close this as unsolvable.
Many thanks for all your help.

Hi Very Happy

When I did it in your console, it actually works. Can you provide me an admin test account dummy so I can do it for you instead?

Re: Fixed or Static widget column

Post by Bignuggs on May 9th 2014, 2:51 pm

PB has weaved some magic and now the right hand column is static when I scroll thru posts.  good stuff, but I think I've asked the wrong question.
I think I should have asked about floating widgets.
But it raises another problem.  the right hand column is now up into the banner pic area and it covers the search box and the column is out of alignment.  so I've changed one of the settings to get it down into the original placement area.
as I scroll down, the widgets go out of sight below the page.
sorry to say, I've deleted the new CSS to get my forum back to the way it was.
Many thanks to all who have helped with my query, I really do appreciate your efforts.
If someone knows how to do the floating thingy, please drop me a pm.
Until then, please don't waste anymore of your time on this dream I had (or maybe it was a brain fart  Very Happy ) and consider this closed.

Regards

Hi Very Happy

Ah, sorry but your terminologies confused me. Actually, static has a different style and the one we did is what you define as 'floating'. Floating is simply the position where it should be placed, either it's left or right.

Also, if you wish to do so, you can add in max-height so that it does not cover or increase the position value of the top and right. It's really all about your adjustments.

The recommended adjustments I'll say is either use #px or % values.
