In progress Domain name change

Post by cardiffmb on May 12th 2014, 9:55 am

Hello all,

My forum name is coming up for expiry in 29 days, it is currently Redbluebirds.com but this is no longer appropriate. The forum is fairly active with 75,000 posts currently, but the numbers will continue to dwindle if I can't change it to something else.

I would like to change the domain by purchasing a different name from yourselves. Is this possible?

If we can change it, I was hoping for a smooth of a transition as possible by avoid using the forumotion sub-domain and re-directing traffic from redbluebirds.com over to the new site.

Final, secondary question, once we are on the new domain name, do I have ownership over the redbluebirds.com domain and if so, how can I access it?

Many thanks

N.B. unrelated, but can someone please change my username, I didn't realise I was using my email address!

To change your username, please send a pm to Buttercup.

So you want to cancel the domain name you have now, so to purchase a new one?

Thanks very muchfor the reply.

Yes I do, but it needs to be controlled if possible.

I do not want to lose all my traffic so I was hoping for a kind of smooth transition from one domain to the other with traffic from the old domain name being redirected for a period of time. This will give me a time to communicate with the users about the changes etc.

Even with a smooth transition, your SEO ranking will be effect because you are changing addresses.

I'm not too worried about that as it's mostly regulars and connections I get from other forums.

Out of interest, what would happen to the old domain name - can I buy it?

Actually - I could setup another forum with the old domain name and just have a html page displaying the new address along with your ads.

That way, I wouldn't lose the traffic (1200+ organic search traffic this month according to analytics) and you could still receive the advertising revenue.

Does that work?

This seems very preferable to me!

Apologies for the multiple of messages but I just want to clarify what I would now like to do:

1. Change the domain name of redbluebirds.com when it expires to something else- purchased with yourselves.

2. Renew the redbluebirds.com domain with you but on a new forum account so I can keep the traffic, seo etc whilst displaying the forumotion ads.

I'm about to go to work for an hour or so and won't be able to respond, but I appreciate your support and assistance so far.

Regards

Hello

Technically it is possible. But, there a very high risk. I mean, your first forum (with the current domain name Redbluebirds.com) will lose all the traffic. It is a shame because it is a forum with a very good activity.

Thanks for the reply Buttercup. Smile

For football club political reasons (change of shirt colour, a mad club chairman and other reasons that I won't bore you with!) my domain name now is very un-popular amongst our football fans and others. In fact it is stopping people joining the forum and encouraging my members to leave in droves!

If I could change the name without losing the forum (and making everyone sign up again etc) that would be great and would ensure that the forum will carry on.

The redbluebirds name does generate a lot of traffic but by creating a new forum with that name I can encourage the visitors (if they are interested) to come over the other active forum.

Basically, it is definitely regrettable after all my hard word that I have to change it, but if I don't, the forum will most certainly cease to be active at all within this year.
