Solved Category Display Table

Post by DestinysGrace on August 12th 2014, 9:02 am

Hello!
I'm making a new skin for my site, here, and one of the things I need to do to make the skin work how I envision it, is that I need a whole new table for the index forum and category display! Unfortunately, I have no idea what most of the variables in the templates do, so I don't know what to move where to get my wanted result.

Essentially, thisis what i want the end result to look like, with the larger grey box representing the no new/new topics icon and the smaller one being the last poster avatar. The lorem text filler is the forum description, make sense?

If I could get at the very least a push in the right direction, as I am fairly advanced at coding and can probably figure this out with some pointers - that would be fantastic! The forum version is phpbb2.

Thanks!

Solved Re: Category Display Table

Try using the Developer Tools of your browser to look for the class or id that's enclosing the categories, then in another tab, go to your index_box template and look for the same class or id. It would probably be what you're looking for. You can then experiment by adding perhaps a word after the variable, save your template but don't publish it first. You should see beside the red word 'Waiting'. Click on that to preview your forum. Now if that word that you've entered beside that variable appears, then it's safe to say that which variable is which.
Just to be safe, it's best if you backup your templates so that you can restore them if something goes wrong. Backup as in copying the entire code in the template and paste it in perhaps Notepad.

Ah, I never really thought to use the inspect element, and I didn't know the preview could be accessed from waiting. Thank you! I have all my templates backed up as well, so I'll certainly be giving it a try. And, the result I'm looking for is possible right, since it seems the categories are a table style? I shouldn't need too much CSS if I'm not mistaken?

Yes. it's all possible just by editing the template, unless if you wish to add in borders to the td elements. And that line below the forum name can actually be added with just a hr element, or you can use the CSS border-bottom.
