Do you want to change post's author (in case of ban)?

Post by Van-Helsing on August 13th 2014, 1:27 am

Hi all,
I suggest to add the option "Change Post Author" to the staff, I think this option is necessary in ban cases.

I think It Should Have A Select Option

o Banned User

o Non- Member

o Staff [Staff Name] "Not Original Poster"

Reason .. on one hand i hate seeing post on my forum from banned users ...then on the other hand no one should take credit for someone else post.. So Yes i agree we need the option but the option for it to be a staff member should be followed with "Not Original Poster" So everyone knows that there not the original poster of the content so there for would not be stealing, plagiarism.. whatever you wanna call it

I think it would be better to just not stamp "guest" on banned or deleted accounts.
And instead, leave their usernames there.
Maybe I misunderstood?

Ban accounts keep their usernames. Only deleted accounts have guests as usernames.

I vote "Yes"

But, rather than seeing deleted members author names replaced with Guest, Banned or Team... I would prefer to see the deleted members user name changed to "Members Account Closed" orphaned posts that remain on forums, may be left on the forum that's an admin decision. It can be very confusing (who is that masked man) for forum members seeing post by guest authors. Other than the forum Admin; it's no one else's business why a members account is closed.

This suggestion is for changing the deleted user's posts to a staff member. Different ideas are all being added and getting votes for it, may a new topic is in order since the suggestions are very different and have a different effect.

Forumedic I understand what you are saying.
But, why would staff members want to credited if the posts are disrespectful. Admin/Staff can be selectful and delete unwanted "Guest" users post. Keep in mind that many post contain important information, links... that other members benefit from and should remain on the forum.

My vote is Yes change deleted members default "Guest" name to "Members Account Closed"

Voted YES!

My current issue is that I may have a message posted by a guest who later registers as a user, but the message post still shows that a guest posted it. I need to be able to assign the newly-registered user as the author of the post.

You're misreading my whole post, I wasn't voting or showing any opinion, just stating that many different views are being mixed in together in this topic and that it would be better for if suggestions were made in a different topic since other suggestions are irrelevant to the poll and original post if that makes sense? This post is about changing the post author not having it stay the original name, etc.

Re: Do you want to change post's author (in case of ban)?

Post by Espectra on March 15th 2016, 5:11 pm

@Forumedic: I was under the impression that the suggestion was merely to have the option of changing the author of a post, period, for whatever reason and to whatever user. If a specific forum creator wishes to have a particular author show up for banned users, could they not simply create a new user account with that name/display and then assign the post to that new user? Would that not resolve all of the issues being proposed here?

e.g.: Joe Blow gets banned, and the forum admin wants to display "BANNED" as the username rather than Joe Blow. Could the forum admin not create a new user named "BANNED" and then assign the new user as the author of that post? This could work for almost anything, couldn't it? A new user named "STAFF" or "Not Original Author" or whatever, if people really wanted something specific to show there.

Banned user's will not have accounts deleted, their names will still show and profile will still exist.

Also, you have people who delete their accounts for a reason and people who get their accounts deleted and it would be unfair to mix them up and have one viewpoint on them all.

It is a very complicated idea, to be honest I'd just opt for a change from "Guest" to "Deleted User" or something similar, changing the post author is unnecessary and CAN be abused.

@Forumedic: I understand what you are saying, but that was not the impression I was getting from the topic of the suggestion. It looks to me like the suggestion was not to change what is automatically displayed when a user is banned but to give forum admins the option to re-assign the author of an individual post manually. I am looking for the ability to manually assign a new author to a specific post, whomever that user may be. Is that not what this suggestion was for?
