Solved "Plus" and "Minus" signs in Reputation System.

Post by Castellana on Fri Aug 15, 2014 1:47 pm

Hello!  Hello

This is a question about forum appearance but it is also a question about feature use, so I hope I've posted in the right place.

Yesterday, I enabled the "Reputation" system for my forum, just to see how it would work and what it would look like.  The "Thanks" button and all the associated features with that button are working the way I thought they would.

Under "Reputation Management" I turned "Positive and Negative Vote" to +0 and "Thanks" to +1. This is to limit the number of points accumulated to only those associated with "Thanks".

The part I don't understand are the small symbols that appear vertically to the right in each post reply box.  They look like + and - separated by a short line, and they appear vertically.  As an experiment I clicked on one in somebody's post and it created a short, vertical red bar in place of the symbols.

What are the + and - for?
When would we use them on a forum?
How do they differ from the "Thanks" button alone?

Thank you!

Try looking at this thread, it should answer most of the questions:

Thanks, but that thread does not answer any of my questions.  It's a simple thread that tells you how to enable Reputation system, but it doesn't go into the fine details of WHY the + and - is needed or HOW to use that feature.  How is + and - different from "Thanks" ?

Also, none of the visual examples in that thread are showing up for me.

Hello i think i can help you on this one.

The + is if you want to give a good rep to that member that posted on your forum when clicking the + button you will get a green line to show that member and your self you have gave that member a good rep on there post almost like a i like it post if you click the - button it will give you a red line this then tells the member that you Do not like there posts and you give them a bad rep.

if the member gets 5 bad reps and 5 good reps the bar will be half green and half red.

For every good rep a member gets there points will go up in there profile for every bad one they get the points will go down.

The Thank system will only let you thank one member per Thread made.

Hope that sort of helps you on your question.

Yes, APE, that is pretty much what I wanted to know.

So, let's say you accidentally click on the "-" when you meant to click on the "+" .
Can you undo it?

No, unfortunately you can't.

I want to point out though that some forums, like the support forum here, will disable the "-" button, making it more like a social media theme (think FB likes, Twitter favorites, etc). Having only "+" might members feel better and stop downvote abuse

No once you have clicked it your vote is placed "I know what a pain in the BUTT"  there should be a way for removing bad reps if made by mistake but our tech team did not think of that when making it i don't think Sad all you can do is change the system like we have done on here so you can not get a bad rep. if you look at our system on here it's the same but we have just made a button at the top of the posts with a Green + and a number.

if you would like to have something like that then please feel free to read the following post

APE, I followed the tutorial you referenced above:
http://help.forumotion.com/t48922-change-the-reputation-bar
and followed the steps.

I used the forumotion green plus sign for my image.

Everything worked and the image displayed correctly.

BUT I would rather have the image display next to my "quote" button on the left hand side of the row of post icons, like you have here.  Is there a way to do that?

Also, is there a way to add a number next to the image, which goes up automatically with each vote, like you have here? 2

Solved Re: "Plus" and "Minus" signs in Reputation System.

Post by Ange Tuteur on Sat Aug 16, 2014 1:04 am

Hello Castellana

I have an old vote system that I wrote awhile back, I changed the selectors over to phpbb2 so it should work.

Administration Panel > Modules > JavaScript Codes Management > Create a new script

Title : your choice
Placement : in the topics
Code:
$(function() {
    $('.vote').each(function() {
       if ($(this).find('.vote-bar').length) { var VCount = $(this).find('.vote-bar').attr('title').replace(/.*\((\d+).*\)/,'$1') }
       if (VCount == '1') var vote = ' vote';
       else var vote = ' votes';
       var VPlus = $(this).find('.vote-button:first a').addClass('VPlus').attr('title', 'Vote up');

       $(this).closest('.post').find('.post-options').append(VPlus);
       $(this).closest('.post:has(.vote-bar)').find('.post-options').append('<span class="VCount" title="'+VCount+vote+'">'+VCount+'</span>');
       $(this).remove();
    });

    $('.VPlus').click(function(){
       $.get($(this).attr('href'), function() {
          location.reload();
       });
       return false
    });
});

Then add these CSS rules :
Display > Colors > CSS stylesheet
Code:
/*Vote System*/
.VCount:before {
  content:"+";
  opacity:0.5;
  filter:alpha(opacity=50);
  margin-left:4px;
}
.VPlus + .VCount:before { margin-left:-9px; }
.VCount {
  color:#0A0;
  font-size:10px;
  font-weight:bold;
  text-shadow:1px 1px 0px rgba(0,120,0, 0.3);
  font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
  cursor:default;
}
.VPlus {
  color:#0A0 !important;
  font-size:10px;
  font-weight:bold;
  text-shadow:1px 1px 0px rgba(0,120,0, 0.1);
  font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
  margin-left:4px;
  position:relative;
  z-index:1;
}
.VPlus:hover { color:#0D0 !important; }
.vote {
  opacity:0;
  filter:alpha(opacity=0);
}

Thank you for this code!  Very Happy  It looks like your example and works the way it's supposed to, as far as I can tell.

To make it show up better on my forum is there a way to -
1. substitute a different image?
2. increase the size of the image?
2. change the color of the green number?

Also, is there a way to get rid of the tiny "-" which appears under the "+" in my result? See screenshot, above.
When I followed the tutorial supplied by APE, I got rid of the "-" by deleting it from the template.  Is there a way to get rid of it without going into the templates again?

Thanks!

To change the color of the text I think its the code in the CSS here
your see this 2 times in the code just change it.
Code:
color:#0A0 !important;
change the #0A0 to what color you want then save.

Thank you, that worked great for the color! Very Happy

If possible, I'd still like to have a choice of image or, if it must stay the way it is, the choice to make it bigger.  As you can see, it looks a little awkward on the far right end, just hanging out by itself.  Also, that annoying minus sign is driving me nuts! *lol*

I'm going to try a couple of things with the CSS ... please keep this open for now.

Yes, indeed!  :wouhou: That worked!

And by making that change, the whole image looks in much better alignment with the other post icons.

Thank you very much for working on that problem! +1

I'm experimenting with making the image bigger.  I see where to do it, but have chosen the wrong size so am still working on it.

Replace your CSS by :
Code:
/*Vote System*/
.VCount, .VPlus {
  color:#0A0 !important;
  font-size:14px;
  font-weight:bold;
  font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
}

.VCount:before {
  content:"+";
  opacity:0.5;
  filter:alpha(opacity=50);
  margin-left:4px;
}

.VPlus + .VCount:before { margin-left:-12px }
.VCount {
  text-shadow:1px 1px 0px rgba(0,120,0, 0.3);
  cursor:default;
}

.VPlus {
  text-shadow:1px 1px 0px rgba(0,120,0, 0.1);
  text-decoration:none;
  position:relative;
  margin-left:4px;
  z-index:1;
}

.VPlus:hover { color:#0D0 !important }
.vote {
  opacity:0;
  filter:alpha(opacity=0);
}

I cleaned it up a bit, you can find the basic font options at the top. The hover color should be at the bottom above the vote rule.

Post by Castellana on Sat Aug 16, 2014 8:19 pm

Thanks for all your help, APE!   Hello

Thanks for the code, Ange!  Very Happy
I'm not sure what you mean by "cleaned up" but the larger font looks much better in this version.  In the old code, 12px didn't look as crisp as 14px in this new code.  So thanks again.

I'm still using APE's code to remove the underline or minus, whichever it was.  Do I still need it?  I think I see some thing similar in your code.

Before I mark it Solved, I have one more question -
sometimes the hover says "Vote up" with hover color, and sometimes it says "1 Vote" without hover color.  What is the difference?  I tried some examples to figure it out but maybe you know?

Yes, I don't think you'll need that rule anymore since I added text-decoration:none; to .VPlus.

If you hover a solid plus which lights up, it means you haven't voted that post up. If you hover a semi-transparent plus it means you already voted or someone voted your post up. Hovering over the number will also display "n vote(s)", whereas hovering the solid plus will display "Vote up."
