Can the forum directories be streamlined to avoid duplicates?

Post by dotdotdot on August 20th 2014, 12:13 pm

The forum directories are a great idea as it makes it easy to categorise different forums, however there are duplicates and as a forum can only belong to one directory, there's confusion about which one to join. For example, in the 'society and culture' category, there's a sub-category for 'celebrities and stars' BUT in the 'art, culture and leisure' category, there's a sub-category for actors.

I'm not sure why 'society and culture' is different from 'art, culture and leisure' as it seems the two cover the same topics.

I notice this because I run a forum for a Hollywood star and really don't know whether it's better for me to be in the 'celebrity and stars' section or the 'actors' section.

If this is a suggestion, please add a poll. You do know that you can create sub-categories in your administration panel, so members can create sub-categories.

I'm talking about FORUM MOTION'S directory of all the forums that you host. Nobody except Forum Motion can edit this. If you go to www.forumotion.com you'll see at the bottom of the page a link to all of the categories in your directory. Some of these are clearly duplicates and I'm suggesting you tidy this up as it's not possible to register a forum under two, duplicate, directories.

AP > General > Forum Promotion > Forum Directory
You can create a sub-category.

Then you understand that I can't delete and recategorise the directory for Forum Motion?

Well there is a difference between "actors" and "celebrities and stars." Celebrities can be athletes, Youtubers, actors, actresses, inventors, etc.

Sure (although there are more forums dedicated to actors under the 'celebrities' section instead of the 'actors' section which is in a different directory), but they both fall under 'culture' and you guys have 'culture' twice in two different directories. What I'm saying is that this makes things harder to find which is the opposite of why you have the directory. Anyone looking for a site about celebrities (any kind of celebrity) is not going to know even where to start looking.

My point is that the 'society and culture' directory and the 'art, culture and leisure' directory are pretty much the same thing and nobody could be reasonably expected to know what sub-directories to find. I'm suggesting that these two directories are merged. I would also guess that 'sports and hobbies' would also fall under the 'leisure' in another directory.

Would 'economy, law and finance' not also fit under 'sciences and knowledge'? If someone had a forum for a famous singer, would they register it under celebrities in the 'society and culture' directory or under 'music and radio'? Etc etc etc.

Good point indeed.
I won't vote though, because I am not sure I grapped your point.

If FM staff members note you can access directories and add them yourself then, it seems redundant.

Unless you talk about the staff adding a section on this forum, for a better promotional purpose of your individual forum.
