More "Generous" Forum Searches

Post by Bully@Wiiplaza on November 22nd 2014, 2:56 am

Issue: When searches are performed with a search term word which is contained in a word of the title it won't return any results.
Example:
Code:
Title: Testing
Search term: Test
No results, but it should find the topic.

Suggestion: Sort search results after relevance. The more exact the title is to the search term the more relevant it is for the searcher.
Example: If my search term is exactly the topic title that topic should show up on top. For each letter differing it makes it less relevant and placed further down. Two matching words are more relevant than just one. Also just keeping whatever order is used so far for the non-exact matches should be fine too. And yes, there's a definite problem with relevance since I usually need to look at the bottom to find what I want. Take Google as an example for relevant search results.

Please fix your search, it's pretty terrible yet one of the most important functions. Sad

Thank you! thumleft

When suggesting something, you need to add a poll to allow members to vote. Also I believe this has been already suggested.

This link is about using Google to search the forum but my suggestion is to improve the forum internal search. I might try the tutorial and see if it's useful though. Smile

I agree that something must be done about these search bars, I usually do not even both with them on forum. I usually just give the direct link to everything in the chatbox.

So true!! Like the search function of forumotion is really really horrible!
Sometimes I deliberately make a post and search just to find out there's no result. I was going to create a topic like this soon myself.
I can NEVER find what I want using the search. It seriously needs update!

I believe * works as a wildcard, so your example would work if you did:

Title: Testing
Search term: Test*

unless we're talking about a different search.

You can now search for tags which are in topics.

What do you mean by tags? I even had my one Super Moderator saying we need a search bar, I told him we do... but it stinks and is useless!

Hi, i quicly read the poll, it is not as much the explanatory question that confuses me, but the choice...

I find a yes/no choice simpler to understand; my mind maybe simple but I am sure of one thing "it is surely beneficial for everyone a better and improved FM search system", correct?

So apparently I can't even search the post content, just the thread titles?

I'm really reconsidering using forumotion right now...

If you use hashtags, you can check the tags box when you do a search. This will search messages.
