In progress what is the best version

Post by angel959 on January 1st 2015, 8:01 am

Hi guys I have never made a forum before I tried to make one earlier with phbb3 that I really liked but it wasn't working  or wouldn't let me make a new user etc what is the best style to run with if you have no coding exp I still want a nice looking forum and really liked the template i had but thought with all the issues I was having it might be best to start over i looked a pun but it doesn't have many templates and i am concerned starting from scratch it will be hard and what does everyone mean when they say phbb3 doesn't have a theme editor??? Can I use credits to add functions or is that unnecessary as I said I want a nice interactive forum with a good profile editor i know myself i love making a cool profile so....

Hi @angel959,

When you created your forum, did you log in with the following ?

Username : Admin
Password : Password used at creation

Failure of account creation could be caused by short names which are considered "spam" if anti-spam features are enabled, which they are by default.

It depends mostly on which one meets your needs, however, I personally prefer phpbb3. It's pretty flexible and easy to customize using CSS or the options in display. It's the same version we're using for the support forum. Only recently template editing was added for the version which allows a even higher level of customization.

I'm not sure what they mean by it doesn't have a theme editor. You can customize the theme via Display > Pictures and colors. Furthermore, you can even incorporate multiple themes with this plugin.

You can install scripts and modifications freely. The only thing that is required would be a knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript if you plan on creating, yourself. However, there are forums that are dedicated to developing features for your board.

Thankyou I am sorta trialing at the moment I did like phbb3 too ,I am not on a timetable thankfully so I will take my time ...I was using the admin as log in...I am not sure what I did lol I will take my time and work through it slowly Really wish I knew a bit of coding though..computers were pretty scarce in NZ when I was growing up....They were things we saw in movies I still remember when the Commodore64 was THE computer haha and the old spacey machines were THE greatest things on the planet....I may be a bit OLD school lol.. Well thanks to you both...and thankyou for the clarification on the theme editing...I read it somewhere that phbb3 did not have it so I was a bit worried about using it glas I checked in Very Happy groar Awesome i will get back to it

Do you mean an official phpBB 3 forum or a forum hosted by Forumotion?

Yes on forumotion  I read somewhere it was different than the others??? I can't remember where that was now sorry...I have gone with the phbb3 one ..I actually think I ws using Phbb2 last time DOH  Confused thinking it was phbb3 Laughing ..I notice there is 83 set themes for phbb3 and 100s for phbb2 but I am guessing that is just because of the amount of time it has been around!!!... Hey can I ask where is a good place to make some individual buttons???
