What is your opinion on deleting members that have only 0 posts? Do you think it's good or bad for the forum?

I think it would reflect your forum's activity better, and make you seem more active. It's not something I would take the time to do however.

I think it's a good thing to do, we PM first then cull members with no posts to free up account names and to keep our member count honest.

Forumotion's pretty good at giving tools to manage accounts like that Smile

I do not delete old user accounts, even with no posts, as a policy - sometimes, people might come back anyway. I have seen this happen on other forums, so just to be safe, I don't delete accounts unless requested - and with a good reason before doing so.

It is my belief that any user with 0 posts and have been registered for 1+ Months should be deleted. I've had a couple instances on my forum where I deleted a couple people with very low post count and they came back and became even more active as to not get deleted again.

If your 0 post members build up, your posts per person ratio is skewed and horrible. Sometimes if you assert that active members only will stay, people will have the incentive to either post a lot or leave since they weren't going to post anyway.

This could also cause the members with 0 posts to break the forum's rules so their accounts are not deleted.

I think as long as you pm them and see if they're active, its ok. I've had several cases on my forum where some weird access problem has kept them from being able to post.

Post by cassini August 26th 2011, 22:23

Thing is I have over 200 members with only 15 who have made posts. Most of the users do log once or twice a month. I have the regular non posters that log on twice or more a week. If I ban or delete it would look bad on the forum & my members will not return.

I have asked this question to other Admin on other forum providers.

They have the opinion that Lurkers ( Non Posters) are members that we have to get used to. What I have done is that when a new member fails to activate their account & I have activated them myself. I tend to give them a month to log on if they have not logged on, I mark them in the Admin panel as non active. However I do get multiple memberships which they get deleted or banned.

It depends realy, if they haven't ever ever been on, I'll email them, and if they say it's ok, or they don't reply n 2 weeks, I'll delete their account. But if they have at least a post, I wont.

I think you should send them e-mail once per week, if you delete them (if they are too much), you maybe will not have members for trading banners with popular sites that requers more users.

Is everyone forgetting they have a handle user options.
So you can set that how you wish for an amount of inactive time or post.

Personally i would think it depends what kind of forum it is. If it is a forum where you have a lot of active members, then have members that log in everyday and dont post or reply to anything, Well thats called lurking,

Lurkers and Forums have never mixed, so i would probably inform them first and give them a chance to post and be active, Then if they continued not to participate and was still logging in all the time. Then i would just ban them.

Anyway,
Hears where the handle user feature/options in case anyone forgot it was there.

Admin panel>User and Groups> Handle users

Thanks Kirk

I have loads of regular lurkers on my forum which myself & my fellow admin have noticed. I have already banned one member from poaching caps & pics & posting elsewhere. This member never credited or gave thanks on other sites just got credit for posting. Even though I marked & dated caps from tv screen captures. I have deactivated non logged on members & will proberly start banning our regular lurkers. Smile

I havent got forum, but, If I had one, I would not delete any account although the user hadnt posted any post...

Why? Really simple: in Forumotion you dont have to worry about D.B. space and things like that, so, why delete them?

They are not doing anything bad, so...there are not problem...

I dont agree with the user wich said "ban them", because, if you do that, the person, although he has not participate, he will not can participate if he want to do it one day...

So, its possible that a user dont participate, but, maybe, one day suddently starts posting good things, but...how could he post if you have banned him/her?

In other hostings (where you have to take a look at the D.B. and so) sometimes you have to delete inactive accounts to have more free disk space, but here luckily you dont have to worry about forum capacity Laughing

Post by CruizingComet October 20th 2011, 21:54

Have been reading through this thread with interest, we have a huge number of zero posters and lurkers on our forum. Whenever we attempt to address the situation by issuing warnings these same members become very indignant and rude towards us, why don't they see things from our point of view, how do they benefit our community? We have probably less than 10% of our members that are actually "Active" on our forum and enter discussion with others, how do other forums do with this?

We also have a high number of people who register only to never visit our forum and we are forever deleting as we have a rule that any new member who registers but doesn't sign on within the first 48hrs will result in their account being deleted.

We did have a spell a few weeks back where we made some of the lurkers and zero posters accounts inactive, they were warned before the action and warnings were ignored, all we asked was for them to introduce themselves to avoid this action, yet as soon as we made them inactive we received a backlash of insults and rudeness beyond belief, it's a shame they didn't put as much effort into supporting the forum as they did in abusing us!

So how do you other guys deal with this kind of thing? What is the best way to deal with 1) Zero posters and 2) Lurkers

I think it is good to do away with "such phantoms" Laughing
Why keeping inactive members, for memory?? This will falsify records, and forum stats if they stay, cheers
NB: I usually adopt a 6 month policy, if not active, with no/few messages, bang they're out ! lol!
