Better security section! Ban by e-mail address!

Post by sirg0508 on November 21st 2006, 3:40 am

I want the ability to ban people by their e-mail address. It is already possible on other forums and the 'security' section on editboard which only lets people ban by IP is frankly useless when the people don't post.

I want to be able to ban people by e-mail address e.g. we have a lot of spammers joining up with e-mail addresses @gawab.com and @medicine.net

There is no way to ban them effectively... if I ban one we still get loads of others joining. I don't want anyone from these e-mail addresses joining. We do get spammers joining up @gmail.com etc. which we obviously wouldn't ban but the others can be acted on.

If I enter *@medicine.net that should ban ANY e-mail address ending in @medicine.net or I could choose to ban medicine@medicine.net and only that address would be banned.

E.g. Here is the ban control section from another forum:

As you can see the only thing on edit board is:

The first site also has ability to ban certain usernames... much more effective than Editboard is!!

P.S. I noticed we apparently can't make suggestions when the big vote is open but I want this included in the next one!

But how exactly can you ban an IP address if they never post? If I click ban... that persons IP address never goes into the Ban IP box.

Yes they can go and create a new e-mail address but like I've said, this is another way to ban them.

Who exactly is going to sign up with an e-mail address with @medicine.net? Other than a spammer? We've had 20+ gawab.com e-mail addresses and all from the US (they added that info into the boxes).

We are a UK site and we rely on members joining with their username from other sites... we can easily judge by e-mail addresses who they are and who we should immediatly ban.

You'd be utterly stupid if you decided to ban someone @gmail.com so while I may not want someone from some obscure e-mail address (and 20 other of their friends), there is a way I can stop those 20 other people signing up to spam the forum.

You obviously don't have the same problem with your forums! If you don't want to ban by e-mail address, continue to use the 'ban' IP section but for us (as I've posted here before), it's pointless!

I've used it on other forums... I don't have their IPs but I do have their e-mail addresses... specific ones I can ban. A pattern I can also ban. If I'm unsure it gets left until we see what they post.

Yes! This needs to be done, definitely!

If we had the option to ban by email I reckon it would dramatically reduce the number of spambots.

It does on other forums... It doesn't stop them but because you can stop the majority coming from certain e-mail providers you know are not genuine it would greatly help the running of forums where a lot of time is spent checking the e-mail address before activating!

I highly doubt that would happen...if you're 'drunk or tired', then are you really going to have gone through all the admin panel menus, typed the email address, and then banned them? Very unlikely.

And you'd have to be pretty stupid (no offence meant) to ban @yahoo.com or @hotmail as these are the most common ones around. Of course everyone's going to be using these - banning them would mean an utter lack of common sense on the part of the admin.

But I think it's a good idea because a lot of the e-mail addresses that spambots use are easily identifiable as spambot emails. They tend to be things like @pharmacy.info and @whatever.info etc.

Just to have the option would be nice. Doesn't mean you have to use it.

lol, man ... do you know about the net?domain? ip?
yes, you can ban the email account

but, on 1 ip add you can make over 10-5.000 email accounts (boots)

if you like to stay all day to ban few emails from the same ip catregory ... is your choice

i dont see the email ban benefit, atall

The thing is, you can only get the ip address if the bot posts on the forum, and not all of them are wont to do that, so as I said, to have the option would be good. It doesn't mean you have to use it.

I meant if they don't post, you wouldn't be able to see the IP. If they've registered it's pretty easy to find their email address.

But to not let this get off topic, I want to say once again that I think this is a good idea!
