When members delete their accounts, the resulting ‘guest’ messages can spoil some threads

Post by Ivan White on May 6th 2015, 9:26 pm

We’ve no wish to ‘force’ people to remain members of our forum, but it does spoil some of the threads if they close their accounts and we are left with a quantity of anonymous messages which just say ‘guest’. In the worst case, a member who had posted over 3,000 messages deleted his account. I know the name can be inserted manually on each message, but that isn’t a realistic option when somebody has been so prolific.

For some time we haven’t allowed members to unsubscribe, and if they wish to leave we have until now (and by mutual consent) just deactivated their accounts. This also leaves open the possibility that their accounts can be reactivated if they change their mind.

In the last few days, a member (who didn’t first contact any of the staff) must have found the link below and deleted his account, leaving 169 more messages saying ‘guest’:-

http://www.forumotion.com/unscribe

So this is a plea for help. We’ve enjoyed using our forum for nearly four years, and we’ve received excellent support from here on the few occasions that we’ve needed it.  However, it would be really useful if a way could be found either to prevent a member from deleting an account without first contacting one of the forum’s administrators, or to automatically leave the name of a former member on all of their posts. Thank you.

Forumotion will not change this because members have the right to leave a forum.  Also if they want to delete their profiles, Forumotion can not stop them.  Forumotion does not advertise the unsubscribe link so members really do not know about it.  They would have to ask here or do a search.

Thank you for your reply.

As I’ve already said, we wouldn’t wish to make anyone remain on our forum; our concern is with what happens to their messages when they leave. Is there any chance of a facility being developed whereby the names of members could be automatically inserted on all their posts when they (or we) close their accounts?

The reason why the username is changed to guest is to make it available again to new members who want to use it.

Thanks for explaining Forumotion’s reasoning.

I’ve registered on sites, and opened e-mail accounts, where my chosen username has been taken. It doesn’t take much imagination to add a number after your name (as I had to do on Twitter), or to amend your name or nickname slightly. Just my personal opinion, of course, but I think that’s the lesser of two evils when compared to the mess created when all the posts of a prolific former member become anonymous.

Well I never had any issue on my forums where members complain about posts with guest authors.

The EXACT reason this will not happen: Under the current laws that Govern Internet access & control in France, FM is LEGALLY obligated offer a option to opt out of a forum.

I don't like the look of 'guest' either.  It makes it look like guests can post without being a member.

Our workaround for when  a member asks to be removed: we change their name to Retired Member 1, Retired Member 2, etc.  The admin puts in his email and password for Retired Member.  We ask the retiring member to point out any posts that might have personal real life info in it, and we'll delete or edit those posts.

But we've only had to do it 3 times in five years.  One retired member returned after a hiatus, and was very grateful that he could get his original name back and didn't have to start over from scratch.

On the few occasions that members have said they wish to leave, I’ve explained that it makes all their messages anonymous and that the account can never be restored. They have usually been happy for their accounts to be changed to ‘user not active’ and for the rank title ‘deactivated’ to appear under their names.

However, last week a foul-mouthed troll (who was close to being permanently banned) found his way to the ‘unsubscribe’ facility and deleted his account without telling us, leaving 169 messages saying ‘guest’. He's since been back to 'report an abuse', which just consisted of more swearing and a threat to find a way to delete the forum.

Clearly, if French law requires that an unsubscribe provision is made, we must accept it, but I just wish Forumotion could come up with a way in which messages on deleted accounts still retained the names of their authors. I have an idea that that happens on ProBoards forums, but I’ve no wish to start one; at the risk of being called a creep, I think Forumotion is an excellent provider with very efficient support staff.

Even if the posts say guests, you can still see the IP addresses.

Yes I agree, even if you can't stop members leaving, I don't want that 'guest' label because there's no way to tell who it was and it's just a shame to ruin the forum history.
It's unlikely a new member will want an ex-member's name anyway.
I would prefer to know the u100 or whatever code, email address and more importantly the username the ex member posted as.
I think it's best to leave the name of the ex member on the posts. (Or at the very least, make it visible to admins).

Voted yes. I'm sick of the "guest" votes that I don't know who posted.

Only just noticed this thread, as it has recently been bumped up to date.
I wholeheartedly agree with the OP on all counts.

The connected Poll doesn't seem to be accepting any new votes - but if I could still vote on this issue, my choice would be:

O Agree

ETA: The Poll is now fixed, so I have made my vote. (Thanks SLGray thumright )

I may have missed it, but I haven't seen a solution to our problem. Our problem is that we've already deleted an account. All that person's posts are marked 'guest', which is confusing. To retain fluidity of threads, we don't want to remove those posts. How caan we change the name on those posts to something more acceptable?

Hello,

You can do this by clicking the edit button on guests posts and changing the name on the edit post screen, then click save. This should change the word guest to whatever you put in.Smile

What you can do is make it a rule that the member should not remove the account before talking to you first and then offer them things to change

like Name change and account closed / locked.
make a note on the profile of the members name when making the change so f the member comes back you can change it back again.

or add a rank to that account before they leave saying Ex member.

Should have done it that way, APE, but didn't. That's the quandary.
