New Member Sign Up

Post by jetlisup on May 27th 2015, 3:32 pm

EDIT! :

Idea has changed from "automatic log in after new member account creation"
(due to security weakness with spambots)
to
"Immediately display log in box after new member account creation".
Seems like a good compromise.
Or at the very least an option to edit the "thanks for registering" page to have a different message in BIGGER font saying "YOU CAN NOW LOG IN!"
as an example....not compulsory of course.

60% of the time, new members don't log in after making an account. I don't know maybe they're confused, maybe didn't read the notice that they can now log in with their new accounts or maybe thinking they have to wait for a confirmation (in my settings, they don't have to wait, they make the account and can log in IMMEDIATELY after signing up if they wish.)

But the problem is new members are not logged in automatically after making an account.
This has stopped many new members coming.

New members should be automatically logged in after making an account.
EDITED Suggestions in first few lines of this post.

All they would have to do is (if you have it set for no account confirmation/verification) is log in right after they register (or verify account if you do have it turned on) and hit 'Remember me' and they will be logged in every time after.

This is quite common on many forum softwares, so I don't know why they would expect such... unless they are new to forums.

I suppose it wouldn't be a bad idea, but if someone has it set to confirm accounts BEFORE the account be used? Then wouldn't work.

I just mean instead of a new member having to log in themselves after registration,
they can just be automatically logged in once registration is complete. (It sounds lazy but some people must be new to forums or didn't look at the notice saying you can now log in...so maybe they assume they have to wait days for a confirmation....sadly a lot of new members never return to log in for the first time)

E.g.

New user makes a new account.

"Thanks for registration, you can now use your account."

New member automatically logged in after account creation.

As I said, I have no problem with it and its not a bad idea. However if an administrator were to have it set for account confirmation, it couldn't just auto login.

I suppose the option would be nice but....

Maybe you could write a tutorial about needing to login after registering or else add a site wide announcement that if you register you will need to login atleast once.

This is actually a good defense mechanism, otherwise it would much easier for spambots to register and then just start posting their spam posts.

No no! Sorry I meant ONLY for automatic confirmation settings.
Hmmm...you have a good point about the spambot thing.

I think perhaps the best solution would be to show the log in box IMMEDIATELY after account creation?
I mean, you still get some protection but the new member can't be stupid to not log in once the log in box is right in his face! Lol.

And also there have been quite a few spambots regardless so clearly it does not protect against all spambots.

But maybe my suggestion is a good compromise? Or not?

Instead of automatic login,
the log in box shows up IMMEDIATELY after account creation. Or does that already happen?

Oh no... Spambots absolutely get in, but not as many. There is no definite way to keep spambots out, but you can only do what you can. I just saying that having it automaticly log in after registering means that is 1 step less it has to go through (less smartness needed) and 1 step easier for it to post that stupid spam on your forum.

Yes, I believe what you just suggested would be a good comprise yes Very Happy.

Also if an administrator has the login/profile widget an enabled it will appear on every page every time to all guests. But not the same I suppose Smile.

Thanks!
But if my suggestion still is not good, another idea is to allow an edit of the "thanks for registering" box so change the font size and say "YOU CAN NOW LOG IN!"
Gotta make it easy for my members lol....
But yeah I'll edit my original post to reflect the change in idea.

WAIT.....was I supposed to put a poll???
Aw man....How?

I think it's supposed to create one automatically , why it didn't I have no idea.

I don't think they allow you to modify the succesfully registered page. They DO, however, allow you to modify the terms of you page (to add your own etc), maybe you put that there, 'AFTER YOU REGISTER MAKE SURE YOU LOGIN' or something in big bold bright letters.

Most forum host providers do not allow automatic log in after registering. I believe it has to do with security.

SLGray, the suggestion has changed to automatically show login box after account creation.
(Instead of automatic login)
