Removal of adf.ly

Post by Rhino.Freak on July 17th 2015, 2:34 pm

So can we please get rid of adf.ly auto-integration into some outside links?
I have noticed for the following websites :
MediaFire
Sendspace

The links automatically become http://adf.ly/numbers/actual_link which goes to 404 NOT FOUND for many many users!
And since my forum is for a game, we have download links, we can't seem to explain to all the new users who come to download the game how to actually get your link..

Thank you!

This is one way that Forumotion earns money.  All a person has to do is wait 5 second for the skip ad button to appear and press it.  I believe this was suggested before and was refused.

Shouldn't this be locked and archived if it was refused before?

No wait.
The problem is with adf.ly and not waiting. I very well understand that forumotion being a free service does require this. But adf.ly is banned in several countries and it goes to a "404 not found" error.

I'm suggesting to get rid of "adf ly", use any other site you wish or anything. But I can't deal with a functioning link redirecting to a broken link. It creates A LOT OF CONFUSION in my forum. Understand this.

Are you sure that the issue is not that the links are not correct?  Also sometimes sites will updated their sites which change links.

Yes the issue is only that adf.ly is blocked / banned in several countries.

Some countries do have it blocked. I believe India is one, some routinely block specific adf.ly pages for no particular reason and a lot of the time adf.ly just doesn't work.

For a Forum Host that's supposed to multi national, having something that's blocked or problematic for users in specific countries isn't good.

Adblock doesn't stop the redirection though you'll still go to the ad.fly page.

You can do a search to locate ways to deal with the block.  I did a Google search, and there is great information.

Can't believe I never saw this topic ! Shocked

Sadly I doubt Forumotion will ever get rid of this integration, because it's one of the ways they generate revenue. Can you imagine the amount forums hosted on Forumotion that have download links with adfly which are clicked ? I'd guess they earn a pretty hefty sum from it all, which is why they'd never dream of removing it even if it causes problems for people. $ reigns supreme my friend

However, I myself agree that it would be nice if it was removed, because it can also cause misunderstandings. ( e.g. people would like I was the one who added the adfly to my link ) Not to mention the questionable ads that show up on there. Like I won a free iphone omg

The only option to get rid of it yourself is to disable ads on your forum with the use of credits. Not a totally bad option if your forum is big and active. Wink

Wasn't this removable with "Remove underlined ads" in ACP > General > Forum > Configuration ?

No, that's for the viglink text advertisements.

Post a mediafire link on a forum with ads enabled an it'll have http://adf.ly/246619/ injected before the URL, which is for Forumotion's adfly account.

So this :
Code:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/wysie89euxhfahr/flat_browser_icons.zip

Would be turned into this in the href attribute :
Code:
http://adf.ly/246619/http://www.mediafire.com/download/wysie89euxhfahr/flat_browser_icons.zip

aaaand profit. Cool

Yeah I understand that that's how they work and gain profit. But adf.ly is blocked in many countries and hence it creates an error page for many which is a problem.

It might be a good idea to start a support topic or contact one of the staff members to report it to the higher ups to see if anything can be done, because it's a major problem if they're injecting a service into links that's blocked in other countries. I know that it's possible change the target audience, so there's no reason not to fix the issue, unless of course they prefer profit over client satisfaction. Then again... they probably make no profit if it's blocked, all the more reason to filter it out for said countries. Razz
