If you add it from the bottom options you should be able to add it.

Go to the bottom. Go to where it says, "Addition of existing widgets". Change Calender to "News" (drop down options) and then choose where you want it. In your case column 1.

The issue is that when you press save it does not save the news widget.

Yes, but I am suggesting an alternate solution for the time being. If you don't drag it and add it by the menu thing at bottom it saves; in case the user wants to add the News widget while they are fixing the issue.
